I have numbness on my chin and lip after my wisdom tooth extraction. Has this happened to anyone else?

I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth by an oral surgeon. The procedure lasted over an hour and consisted of the dentist drilling little pieces of my tooth off to get it out. Since I am 28yrs old the dentist told me the roots were wrapped around my nerve so I may have numbeness, which I do. Has anyone else expereicned this? How long before the sensation came back?

This is a complication that while not common is experienced by all dentist and especially Oral Surgeons in the removal of teeth. Just make sure to call your dentist and keep him informed. Especially, when new symptoms arise. If the nerve is just bruised it will return relatively quickly 2-3 weeks. If the nerve was damaged a bit more it could take several months. Just be aware when you are eating hot food to approach from the side that still has sensation so that you don't burn your self. Avoid chewing gum and anything that might cause you to bite yourself.

One more thing, if it starts to feel all prickly like tiny needles poking you that is a good thing thats the nerve repairing itself.
Reply:Dre's response makes me feel a lot better as well. I keep experience that prickly numbness feeling off and on. If it's the nerve repairing... good. It's just getting a little bit annoying. Report It

Reply:I had mine out a couple of months ago and I was 24. I had a painful extraction as well. My numbness lasted for 3-4 days.
Reply:No one can tell you. The nerves were at least displaced inorder to remove the teeth. Could be weeks. Could belonger. Be patient. You can stimulate the area by rubbing it; it may or maynot help.
Reply:too much novacaine, yes, I have experienced it, a few hours after the dental surgery.
Reply:I didn't have this, but I was "a little older" when I had mine pulled, too, and was repeatedly cautioned that this was a possibility. A friend of ours did go numb, but I believe it lasted a few (2 or 3) weeks for him. I'm sorry that happened, hope it goes away soon! My only complication was a dry socket and that hurt pretty bad. Reply:Numbness from the local anaesthetics(the injection) that your denstist gave you will usually last for 3-5 hours.....But when you said that your dentist told you that the roots were wrapped around the nerves and that you may have numbness,it means you may have a possible permanent numbness.This is one of the risk factor in taking lower wisdom teeth.


Well,hopefully you are just numb because of the local anaesthetic,and not because the nerve was damage.
