Tooth extraction?

I was referred to an oral surgeon as i was left with a small peice of tooth deep in my gum after a tooth extraction. The surgeon said it is still infected and needs to come out . I haven't had any problems and have still got the choice to go through with this in four weeks. I am concerned about the risks after the removal which was being left with a numb bottom lip and chin what are the chances of this happening?

I would be more concerned with the risks of not removing it. Severe painful gum disease, tooth loss. deterioration of the jaw.





The chances of there being any serious complications from the removal are quite low. Have the oral surgeon take a panoramic x-ray first.
Reply:there is a piece left in mine and i am not going back again i was in agony the last time my dentist didi it to me and she still couldnt get all of the root out i went to the chemist and bought a really good toothpaste and a bottle of corsodyl mouthwash tastes like crap but it works because its specially for gum infections i swear by it but whatever you decide good luck
Reply:Even with a "simple"injection it is possible for the needle to damage the nerve and cause a paralysis in the nerve which would result in a bottom lip and chin that would feel frozen either permanently or for a long while. If the oral surgeon mentioned this possibility then the root fragment must be in close proximity to the Mandibular branch of the Trigeminal nerve.


Obviously it is a risk. But so is leaving the tooth fragment behind. I am seen fragments that caused trouble later, and some that did not. But one thing is for certain, it is likely easier to remove the fragment now then it would be down the road once the bone has filled in, if the fragment were to get infected. You are in good experienced hands with the oral surgeon. I am sure everything will turn out just fine.

Reply:If the piece is small enough (%26lt;2mm) the risks of not having it extracted are practically none. If it is a lower dental piece, the risk of numbness is related to the proximity to your mandibular nerve, which can be damaged during the extraction. The X-ray must be well studied.
Reply:your numb lips ,tonque is due to the effect of anaesthesia,it will subside after few hours.
Reply:The numb bottom lip and chin will only be temporary, I would get it done if the option is still there, it may not be bothering you now but it may in the future. I had the same thing but I went under the 'happy gas" instead of right under and I didnt feel a thing except happiness!!
