Acceptable Pain Medication for Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

My wife just had one of her wisdom teeth pulled this afternoon and is in considerable pain, but is bearing through it pretty well. Her dentist told her to take 800mg Acetaminophen/every 6 hours. She is really a little girl (no sexism implied :-) when it comes to pain, and she asked about anything stronger she could get than Tylenol, and her dentist told her flatly that he didn't think it would be necessary.

Now, on Monday she goes in for the remaining three, plus a couple fillings and we are really concerned about her comfort after the extractions. Should she expect the dentist to giver her a script, and if he doesn't, is there any other way she can get relief? I don't think she could have convinced the denstist she was a junkie if she tried, she's a very clean cut, young %26amp; fit woman.

Acceptable Pain Medication for Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Is it just tylenol, or is it tylonol w/ codiene. which is what I got,as well as about anyone I knew did. something like Tylenol #3 or so,

Tylonol brand name for Acetaminophen

and I guess a good question that would pertain: Is she pregnant, or did she say she could be, as then the light script would make some sense, however note: that amount of tylenol is close to the recommended limit for daily dosage of Acetaminophen per day, so wouldn't be recommended to increase it; talk to doctor/dentist, you could try calling them, but don't know if dentist have night call service like other doctors. but who knows if he would think it an emergency to call you back???

well good luck hope she can fall and stay asleep for awhile anyway as it would be some relief.
Reply:All he gave her was tylenol? He sounds like a dink. Most dentists will write out a prescription for Vicodin, or Percocet for wisdom teeth extractions.
Reply:I was given percocet, which worked, for the most part. I wouldn't be satisfied with Acetaminophen.

Make sure she keeps it iced, almost all the time. Frozen peas and an ice bandage work great. The sooner the swelling goes down and stays down... the happier the wife.... and the happier you.
Reply:Call the dentist first thing in the morning and tell them the 800 mgs is not helping. Then put her on the spot. Tell her she can either give her something stronger or you will have the others removed by another dentist.

That will hit her in the pocketbook.

She MUST release all your records, including x-rays. If she balks at doing so contact the state board of dentistry also.

For the pain right now, go to the ER.
Reply:threats will make you look like a junkie looking for a score, and you'll get nothing and like it.

Tell him the Tylenoll is not helping, and can you get something for the pain.

Mostly Norco/Vicodin Percocet/Lorecet Tylenolwcod. #3 is prescriped with wisdom teeth.
Reply:Vicodin or Darveset for pain and for imflamation i would suggest 800mg every 8 hours (ibuprofen).

If the dentist refuses have her go to the Emergency room. They will definately give her something.

Note: Vicodin can cause constipation and dry mouth.

Darvaset can cause complications if you have a seizure disorder. Make sure you know her medical back ground before hand.

Good job looking out for your woman!
Reply:Are you sure he said Acetaminophen? It should be Ibuprofen.

I advise going to an oral surgeon for the remaining extractions...regular dentists usually don't have the correct instruments or training for this type of procedure. Also, an oral surgeon has at least 4 years of medical training that dentists don't have. Recommending such large doses of acetaminophen sends a warning flag...please help your wife look into finding a qualified professional.
Reply:Ibuprofen every 4 hours for inflammation...and a low dose of Vicodin for pain as needed...but if pain is too bad that could be a problem called Dry Socket, and extremely painful...usually happens with smokers..should be treated ASAP takes sometime to control that pain...errgghhh
