I had one tooth pulled today (wisdom) because my jaw has been hurting and I thought that was from my rotten tooth. When the dentist went to pull the bottom wisdom tooth I could really feel a terrible pain! He numbed it repeatedly till he finally gave up and refered me to a surgeon. I feel bad like I failed somehow. I know that sounds funny. But they gave me so many shots and I could still feel the pain!
Why? Is there something wrong with me? I feel sad about the whole visit. The dentist looked disappointed with me and my reaction.
Another thing...he started to pull the tooth on the bottom out but then he stopped...does that mean it will be loose now? Will that cause problems?
Pain during tooth extraction made me give up....?
LOL...it's neither yours nor your dentist's fault. The guy that answered first obviously has no idea about anything dental. I worked for a dentist for a couple of years and my mom has been in the dental field for almost 20, and although it is very uncommon, it does happen. Your body just doesn't react to the anesthesia like everybody else's does. For one tooth to be pulled is normal....the only reason a family dentist would refer someone to an oral surgeon for one tooth (esp a back tooth like that) would be if the tooth was embedded in the bone, in which case you would have to be referred to an oral surgeon b/c they have the special tools. And when you go to see the oral surgeon, they will put you under a general anethesia (put you to sleep) and then pull the tooth. You will never even know what happened. This probably runs in your family....you're not a freak.
Reply:Your dentist needs to have his license revoked. He should know how deep the numbing drugs are going and whether or not it will overload his patient's threshold for pain BEFORE attempting the extraction.
Surgery should have been made an option before the procedure
Reply:I feel your pain. When I was about 13 I had three molars pulled. The dentist at the time gave me 27 shots of number juice. I still felt pain, he just told me to bear up. But that was 46 years ago. I understand they have better stuff today. Maybe you should check with an oral surgeon and get their opinions besides a dentists' opinion.
Reply:Your body seems to have more resistance to normal anesthesia than everyone else's. that's normal you are not a freak. Surgeon knows what kind of drug you need now, cause you need to have that tooth pulled out. Good luck!
Reply:I'm sooo glad you asked this question!!! The same situation happened to me approx. 2 weeks ago!
I've made a appointment with a oral surgeon. I visited the emergency room, because i researched and found that a toothache can cause result in a heart attack or stroke at the least.
Until my appointmet comes, I am taking tylenol pm and penicillin . (Tylenol 3 did not work for me).
You can always call your local ER nurse or pharmacist.for more detailed information regarding pain and infection management until the tooth is removed.
