Is extraction the only solution for an infected tooth?

My son is 2 1/2. He had a big fall and injured his front teeth...which healed. Then many moths lated he had a second fall...but this time a swollen ball formed on one of the teeth. I decided to watch it for a week but I don't know how I forgot it. I remembered 3 months later...I have been beating myself up for the past week. Now there is second ball of flesh dangling on the second tooth...both bleed. I took him to the dentist who said the infection got too far. A second person at the office said it was bad...and he removed the two teeth. I have been crying since we got in the car...and I cried beside his bed when he slept. I don't know how I forgot it, I am usually very careful esp with heath issues. I am very sad because he will have that smile until he gets his permanent teeth. Was extraction the only solution?

Don't drive yourself crazy over this. If the baby wasn't telling you about the pain it probably wasn't that bad mainly because the nerves were probably hurt after the fall. Yes, extraction was the only way but a lot of kids have this done right after falls and the teeth die off. This will not affect the permanant teeth. It actually is better for them for the tooth to be gone. You have to stop thinking about what you feel is a huge error. As parents we are always going to have some sort of mistake we make and this is only natural. Be happy the teeth are now gone and there will be no more problems with the Sweetie.

Reply:don't beat yourself up....yes extraction is the only solution when those teeth become infected....Please don't let it bother you to much they would probly needed extraction a couple months ago...Dr.J the fall is what did it not you
Reply:my advice to you is...you must bring your son as soon as possible to nearest dentist or doctor don't just observe it because you are not a doctor that you know everything because doctors know best and so that your son is not suffering...
Reply:Yes and Dr. J is so right, don't beat yourself up, time didn't change the outcome in this situation.
Reply:JM,

IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. I'M SURPRISED THE DOCTOR DIDN'T OFFER TO DO PULPOTOMIES FOR THOSE TEETH RATHER THAN TO EXTRACT THEM, BUT IF THERE WERE FRACTURES OF THE TEETH THEN THE EXTRACTIONS WERE THE RIGHT CHOICE.

WHEN A TOOTH IS FIRST TRAUMATIZED IN A FALL THE NERVE INSIDE IT MAY OR MAY NOT HEAL. IF IT DOESN'T HEAL A PULPOTOMY WILL SAVE THE TOOTH FROM EXTRACTION.
Reply:When infection in the teeth has progressed to a point where multiple abscesses are present then yes, removal is your best option. I honestly wouldn't beat yourself up over it. I would try to learn from it. On the bright side, the infection didn't cause the removal of permanent teeth and he is still very young. At his current age the missing teeth probably don't bother him as much as you think, and by the time it might begin to bother him his permanent teeth will more than likely be growing in and those around him will have missing teeth as well due to their baby teeth coming out. Everything is okay. You're not a horrible mother.
