I would like a real dentist to answer this or people can post on their own experiences. How long after an extraction will I be worry free from getting an infection? will I be ok after 10 days for thats the length of my antibiotic perscription??? Question #2 is how long will it take for the hole to fill with new tissue. its been 8 days since extraction. I did indeed loose my blood clot but I have no pain at all, just a tad bit of discomfort so I asume the wound must have healed enough to avoid the dry socket issues. I have slight pain but its so mild just taking ibuprophen works.
After tooth extraction, whats the healing process?
The antibiotics will provide you with coverage for about 2-3 days after you take the last one. By then you should have enough healing take place to have closed the wound, and infection should not be a worry anymore. The injury to the bone itself, where there is a hole left from removing the tooth, will take about 6 weeks to fill in and repair. You may notice a slight jawbone ache in that time if you eat something that takes a bit of strong bite to break up. I'm thinking primarily things like jawbreakers, but of course anything really tough to chew can do it. The hole left in the gum can take a few months to actually fill in, depending on the size of the tooth that was removed and how big a hole was actually made. Eight days post removal means that you are well into the healing process, and the risk of infection and dry socket are pretty well past. The gum will have closed enough to protect that bone until it heals, and enough to ward off infection as long as things don't get just nasty in there. You still need to swish rinse after eating to make sure things don't pool in the gap, and of course be gently brushing the area and flossing. If you have had most of the swelling go down, and are comfortable enough to be down to Motrin for pain control, you are actually healing right on time,if not a little quicker than most. By the time you finish the antibiotic you shouldn't really be needing much for pain, and the area should not be nearly so tender to touch. Sorry, I'm not a dentist, just a nurse- but my 2 eldest had wisdom teeth removed, and I've had plenty of experience in the ER with post-extraction Q %26amp; A. It really sounds like you are doing fine, and have nothing much to be worried about now. Most of the healing left to do will go on without much notice to you, and without any problems coming up.
