Tooth extraction: do I have an infection?

I had my tooth extracted on Wednesday. It's not my wisdom tooth, but the lower last tooth. Anyhow, I don't have any pain and there doesn't seem to be much swelling. However, the socket seems to be covered by this white thing. I don't know if it's mucus or what. And I have a bad taste and breath. Underneath this white thing I assume is the blood clot. Do I have an infection? Would antibiotics take care of this?

No pain and no remarkable swelling indicates, no infection. What your seeing is the healing of the tissue which is about right on schedule for 4 days healing time. You need to brush and floss all of your teeth avoiding the extraction site, but rinse vigorously with warm salt water making sure no food particles are left in the socket area. This sometimes takes months to fill in completely. You're doing fine, so relax. If you do start to experience pain, fever or swelling more than what you had initially then you should call your dentist.





additional information: It would be difficult for you to dislodge the clot now unless you were to stab the area with something sharp, continue to be cautious with food, rinsing won't hurt but will help with the taste and breath. So rinse after eating or drinking and try to brush all the teeth well along with flossing.
