Hey, right. I've just had one of my back teeth / tooth extracted, at 9:40am, it's now 11:30am. He gave me the best numbing stuff, but now I think it's wearing off, and my mouth has a little pain now, and more and more blood is coming out when I spit. Is this normal? He said I can't have any medication til' later on etc. Nor am I alloud to sleep!?! Eat, drink etc. He said if the pain gets really really bad then I have to go back. But I can't go back until Sunday evening, as that is when the Dentist is open again. So yeah, pretty silly. So basically, is it "normal" for my tooth to be in a little pain, at this point? And when "should" it start to get better?
Many thanks, on all advice.
Thanks,
Kirk.
Hello. Tooth Extraction help / advice...?
Hi Kirk,
My name is Paul, a dentist in Ireland.
What you're experiencing is normal.
Firstly let me tell you do NOT rinse with salt water, or anything, today. Its too soon, and you may rinse out the clot where the tooth was.
An extracted tooth site will certainly still be bleeding a bit at this stage, all day in fact and sometimes even a little bit tomorro. Once its NOT bleeding heavily thats ok.
It stands to reason it'll bleed when you consider the depth of the roots, especially on a back tooth.
Eating ,drinking, sleeping:
Eating can dislodge the blood clot where the tooth was interfering with healing.
After a while some warm soup is ok, not too hot.
Tea and coffee are too hot, exclude them today.
Eat to the other side when you eat again.
No strenous exercise or work today.
Sleeping, the dentist will want you to be upright to keep the blood pressure off the site, however tonight when you need bed you go as normal but use an extra pillow to prop yourself up.
Pain : is normal for a few days, after all you've had an invasive job done there. Also minute pieces of dislodged bone may come to the surface.Again this is normal.
We concern ourselves with severe pain, which may indicate a dry socket. This is more common in smokers. If you're a smoker dont smoke today.
This is more common in lower teeth also.
Painkillers: Its ok to hold a COLD compress to your cheek for short periods.Make sure the compress, ice bag whatever is in a towel so you dont get burns from the cold on your skin. This will help pain and reduce possible swelling.
An anti-inflammatory painkiller is useful.Your dentist may have prescribed some. However be aware your own dentist is best advised to tell you, knowing your medical history and allergies or anything.
After a day or two rinsing with warm water and salt is a great healer.
If you feel worried ring any dentist and explain, I think you will be ok.
Also feel free to email me.
And good luck..remember that tooth is gone now so you needn't put up with it anymore!
Paul
Reply:Try rinsing with a little salt water...that usually helps me. Everyone is different with pain and the way their body reacts, but yours doesn't sound all the different or unusual. The medicine part is strange though. Mine usually gives me Tylenol 3 (with codine) and some antibiotics which I start right away. What you really don't want to do it drink alcohol or smoke as those things can prmote dry socket (that's really painful)
Good Luck
Reply:The pain is normal. The bleeding is not. Sounds like the blood has not clotted properly which will lead to a dry socket, I would ring now while he is still open and ask for advice.
Reply:I had a wisdom tooth and a molar taken out last Tuesday and it is still uncomfortable.
It will take a while to get better. Be patient,
You should be ok with Nurophen.
Reply:cannot understand all that pain. had extractions before and not that bad. however everyone is different. no smoking . causes blot clots and No spitting. do not rinse until.. he says you can..and you sorta of let water dribble out of mouth. not spitting. never heard you could not go to sleep. by sunday you should be fine. if not.. you have a low tolerance for pain.. or something could be wrong.
Reply:I would hope that the cotton wool plug that the Dentist put in the old tooth socket would still be there, as its not been two hours since the extraction. If not roll one up and plug it in there.!Did you drink or eat anything , specially warm fluid., cos thats a no no so early.Pain, yes , you would be getting some, but if the bleeding is worsening, I would be going to a Doctor, Emergency Hospital or something similar.I would have given it 3 to 4 hours before I ate or drank anything. My last extraction I was told I could have a couple ;of Panadol, with a sip of cold water. Rinsing the mouth too soon is not good.
Reply:well if it were me and it was bleeding to much i would go to the emergency room better safe than sorry
Reply:little pain is normal, but blood should stop. go to sleep and eat but not hard food today, just so you don't hurt the wound. from tomorrow will be better, need some time to heal with no pain of course.
Reply:Hi, I had to have 4 teeth out before i got braces so I feel for you
Dont spit even though it tastes bad because when you spit it loosens the clot and makes it bleed again, if you keep spitting it will takes ages to heal.
I spat the blood on my first extraction and it took all day to stop it bleeding! next time round i knew better.
You'll have to grin and bear it lol
Hope your feeling better soon
P.s salt water stings and tastes bad but it really works
PPs dont poke that part with your tongue cos that makes it bleed too
Reply:Pain normal... you've had abig tooth pulled. Don't understand why you can't take regular painkillers... avoiding Asprin. Normal for some blood in saliva but if you think it's heavy place cotton hankerchief on area and bite down leaving it there for 30 mins ... don;t remove it earlier. if excess bleeding you can't stop you will have to call A%26amp;E , If all ok it should feel a bit better by tomorrow,
Just looked at some other answers... do not rinse til 24 hours after extraction as you could dilodge blood clot.

Reply:The local anastheticcs used in dental surgery contain vaso-constrictors which restrict the blood flow to the area being treated on. This keeps the anaesthetic in the area where it is needed and stops it from dispersing around the body. After about two hours the effect of the vaso-constrictor wears off and heavier bleeding can occur, THIS IS NORMAL and your dentist should have given you a dressing to bite on which will help.
Pain after LA (local anaesthetic) wears off is also normal. Remember that you've been through surgery and your body tissues have been cut and pulled around just as they would have in any other type of surgery. Treat yourself as you would if you had been in hospital for the treatment: take it easy on yourself and expect discomfort for a short while. Talk to the chemist about pain relief.
DO NOT rinse your mouth out. Doing so will rinse away any helpful clot which will be busy repairing the damaged area. hot drinks will also encourage blood-flow so try to avoid them until the bleeding is long ceased.
Reply:Your tooth pain is definately normal at this point. You should be allowed to drink and take medication however. The blood can be normal too, all though too much is usually not a good sign (mine bled for a couple of hours). Rinse your mouth with some lukewarm salt water, and follow the directions that they gave you. If the pain gets intolerable, go to the emergency room, and they can numb you up, and give you a prescription.
Reply:Of course you will have some discomfort-you've had a tooth extracted! Dont rinse with salt water straight away though-leave it 24 hours, otherwise it'll be like picking a scab and keep bleeding. If you smoke-DONT!You're risking a horrible infection that will cause you worse pain!I hope you feel better soon!
Reply:Ok I got an abcess tooth out...I dunno if the abcess has anything to do with the pain though.
But anyways I was in agony!
When the numbness weared away It felt like I had a HUGE toothache were the tooth once had been..In my gum like.
The pain was really bad and I went to bed winging like a baby lol...My mouth was sore for a good few days.
If the pain is really bad you are right to go back...As you could have a dry socket.
Sorry If I scared you but its only for a couple of days the toothache like pain was gone the first day.
