Wisdom tooth extraction?

I had a wisdom tooth pulled on Monday, and went back today for a check up. While I was there, my dentist put something small and brown back where the tooth was pulled, but didn't say a word to me about what it was. I'm wondering what it is? Obviously it's something that needed to be done, I'm just curious as to what. Thanks.

Wisdom tooth extraction?
Your dentist should have explained to you what he was doing. It sounds like he feels you have whats called a dry socket. Most of the time this comes with severe pain but not always. What he placed what a dressing, iodaform with drysocket paste (smells like cloves). He should have scheduled you to come back in the next day to remove the dressing and replace or leave the are to heal on it's own. You should have received a monoject syringe to keep the area clean, if not request one. If none of this happened at the last appointment you should call, talk with one of the dental assistance and ask if you need to be seen again or if you need to remove the dressing yourself. If the dressing has fallen out on its own that's ok. You should still go to a drugstore and pick up a syringe or stop by the dentist office for one, they owe you.
Reply:Probably the scab, no worries
Reply:it was probably a piece of food that was stuck in there...No biggy...
Reply:Maybe it was a blood clot, or food. I had 4 dry sockets when I got mine taken out, and my dr packed the holes where my teeth used to be with gauze that I had to change out every few days. I believe he did it to keep the holes from filling with food and getting infected.
Reply:If you are getting a 'dry socket' it may be something to help the extraction hole heal. Can you taste something like cloves in your mouth?
Reply:Its a blood clot - you need that there so you do not get air in the empty space........trust me I my blood clot came out and I was in pain.
Reply:Your dentist should have told you what he was doing, but you should have asked. Grab a mirror and a light and look back there. Its probably gauze or something.

If you're concerned, call and ask.
