How long does it take for the gap in the gums to fill in after a wisdom tooth extraction?

Had a wisdom tooth taken out 6 weeks ago and there is still a hole in my gums. My dentist told me that it will eventually fill in with gums and bone, but it's been 6 weeks! Is it possible to have a permanent hole in your gums after an extraction? or... am I just being impatient?

At six weeks you should have primary closure, that means that new skin (gum) should have grown over and there should no longer be a clot. It should definetly no be oozing blood at this point. As for the space filling in, Some extractions site fill in faster than others. Factors include, age, health, infection at time of extraction, smoking habits, genetics. I wouldn't be to concerned, it will fill in. Bone physiology is extremely complex and it will reshape itself over time to take on the most effecient shape, and holes are not part of that equations. Be patient it will fill in.
Reply:It will fill in...I can't remember how long but I thought I was going to have it forever to...give it another month and it should be gone or at least small enough so you forget about it.
Reply:It can take up to a year. I know it's hard, and I know your tongue wants to keep checking it out ... but try to be patient.
Reply:it varies for everyone, but usually about 2 - 2 1/2 months to completely close. The hole should not be permanent.
Reply:Depending on the type of extraction and how well you kept the site clean, it can take about 6 months to several years to completely fill in. That's what my oral surgeon told me anyway when I had mine removed.
Reply:Being impatient! Figure the body was used to something there, now it has to mend it's self! But it will fill in - there will always be a slight indentation. But no worry, no ones gonna get in there and check it out...lol

P.S. I hated food getting caught in there!
Reply:Its so hard to NOT freak out a little bit when things like this happen to you. Ive had three removed. You will be fine, it takes a while, just try to make sure you dont let stuff gett stuck in there. Be patient!!
Reply:It can take a while for the hole to fill in completely like 6 months, growing new bone and tissue takes time. It will eventually fill in, you could always have a divot in the area where the tooth was taken out if they had to remove a lot of bone to get the tooth out. Just give it time....mother nature needs time.
Reply:It does take some time. Be patient and keep food out of the hole.
Reply:It can take up to 6 months for things to heal completely
