Had an tooth extraction , why does my mouth hurt?

had a molar extraction done a week ago and I have a thobbing pain that seems to be in my jaw and upper teeth on the side where the extraction was done. After about 10 hours the motrin will wear off and my left side of my mouth will ache. I had a canker sore in which the dentist said was large an may be why I was feeling pain, so they put meds on it and also checked for a dry socket, they told me to come back in a couple of days if it still hurts. Anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

dry sockets are painful, but sois phantom pain the nerves have been tampered with were your tooth wasextacted-you may feel it off and on for two or so more weeks.rinse your mouth with salt walterif its a canker sore abreva or generic will ease it,use salt water swish and spit.
Reply:sounds like dry socket to me...i'd go back asap. they should've given you some type of prescription vicodin. try taking 2 extra strength tylenols. leave some ice on your cheek (wrap a paper towel around the ice pack) for about 10-15 minutes. then give your cheek about a 5 min. break from it. call tomorrow and tell them its really bothering you. if you cannot stand it anymore(pain is 8-10, 10 being the worst) and they are not there..go to the ER, they'll give you some medicine
Reply:maybe it could be and extended tooth masculation ask another doctor for hellp
Reply:you can stop the pain by rinsing your mouth with salty warm water try it. Instant satisfaction!
Reply:You could have dry socket.. you could have gotten some food stuck in the extraction site.

Have you ever had a tooth pulled before? Your jaw will ache for awhile as your gums are healing...but one thing you also need to remember is that your jaw is bone and the tooth was ripped out of threre. You will have pain for awhile and if you are not use to it or don't have a high tolerance for pain, than what you are feeling is normal. As the jaw heals you will also itch on that side
