How hard is it to remove the stitches yourself from gum surgery, as from a difficult tooth extraction?

Parts of the stitches already fell out by themselves. It's been twelve days since the extraction. I don't think these are "dissolving" stitches, though. The shattered tooth was an upper molar or something (the big old tooth next to last in the row).

If the dentist wanted you to return for suture removal, then wouldn't he have told you? Perhaps ring the receptionist and ask.

Dissolving sutures can go anything up to 5 weeks, but that length of time is not really necessary in dentistry.

Most dissolving sutures for dentla use are skin-coloured and will last 5-14 days.

Non-dissolving tend to be distinctly coloured (e.g. blue).
Reply:I would not try to remove the stitches myself. It is not a question of hard - theoretically you can do it if you have a mirror and are willing to look for them.

But usually there is no charge for the return visit and removal of sutures. It gives the surgeon the opportunity to look at the socket and see how it has healed.
