Pain medication for wisdom tooth extraction?

I had my four wisdom teeth removed on Thursday morning. Three of them are fine now and hurt very little - but one them is quite painful. It was the most traumatic extraction and the dentist told me to expect more pain with that one.

Anyway, I was prescribed percocet to take as needed and ibuprofin to take every 8 hours. I used all of the percocet, so all I have left is ibuprofin - which, unfortunately, doesn't last for 8 hours. Now that I'm no longer taking percocet, can I take ibu every 4 hours? Or take something else in between like tylenol?

Yes, that should be fine, taking Ibu. every 4 hours...but you should really call your doctor. He may be able to give you more Percocet...also, if it continues to hurt, you might have a dry socket, which requires another doctor visit.
Reply:I'd call your doctor up and let them know about your situation; they'll be able to provide you medicine that will work better than any over the counter meds you can purchase.

As for dosage on the over the counter meds - I don't think it would be responsible for anyone on here to tell you anything other than to follow what it says on the bottle or the box. Only your doctor can tell you to "override" medication dosages listed on over the counter medications. Those numbers are there for your safety - not to keep you in pain or make you wait for relief - and they are based on your liver's ability to metabolize the agents you are ingesting. They do a lot of scientific studies to figure out what is the right amount... follow what's on the box.
Reply:Continue to take the ibuprofen as directed, and yes you can use Tylenol in between. If this does not give you relief then call your dentist and explain your situation. He may have to prescribe more of the pain killer. Hope you're feeling better soon.
Reply:call an all night pharmacy in your area and talk to the pharmacist.

They can give you safe reliable information and answer questions that you may have until you can call your dentist. Too much ibuprofen can be harmful. Tell them the milligram amount you were prescribed and they can help you safely.
