How long after a tooth extraction before you can smoke.?

I just got out of 5 days in hospital for a draining of an abcess and extraction of two teeth. Today I had to go to get another extracted and have been given a week's supply of anitibiotics ... My question is, how long before I can start smoking? I suffer an anxiety disorder and am finding this bit very hard ... Not having a cigarette. Someone suggested I should be ok as long as I rinse with salt water straight after

Also, what pain relief? I have neurofin but is that bad?

go get yourself some patches and enjoy your dreams.
Reply:The hole has to close up and that can take 48 hours for a good closure. The smoking so soon after the teeth extraction causes something called dry sockets and they hurt so bad. Put you on your knees gasping from the hurt kind of pain.
Reply:i got a tooth pulled and smoked 10 min after they finished. just make sure you bite on cotton or something to help protect the area.
Reply:I don't know about the pain relievers. I would think that simple Ibuprofen would help because it has anti-inflammatory properties.

As for the smoking, it's not the smoking itself that is the issue...it's the way that you do it. As you inhale you are creating suction. That is the last think you need with those holes left by the extractions, because you will dislodge the clots and not only cause bleeding, but dry socket. You don't want that. Trust me.

You should also avoid using straws for the same reason.

Salt water is a good thing for a week or so, because it's an acid solution and will keep bacteria at bay and help your gums heal.

Sorry my friend but smoking might not be such a good thing for you right now.
Reply:I smoked about two hours after I got out of there, just be careful with the "sucking in" and don't let too much pressure build up in your mouth, the reason they don;t want you smoking is they're afraid the suction will dislodge the clot you need to have in there for it to heal.

They gave me Tylenol with codeine, but it made me feel retarded. If I was in a lot of pain, I'd just take it right before bed, but not when I needed to function. I stuck with just regular ibuprofen.

If after a week and a half it feels infected or is still bothering you, gargle with antiseptic mouthwash(Listerine)-it hurts like HELL, but it'll clear out any topical infection immediately.
