For how long does it hurt after just one wisdom tooth extraction?

I got a wisdom tooth out 2 days ago, it was just with local freezing, nothing major. It didn't hurt that much the day I got it out. Yesterday, the day after the extraction, it hurt a bit on and off, in the morning and in the evening. Today it actually hurt more, the adjacent tooth throbbing like crazy.

Is this normal?

For how long does it hurt after just one wisdom tooth extraction?
7-10 days..
Reply:if your not on meds probably
Reply:It doesn't hurt at all, I was prescribed aspirin w/codeine and I didn't even take any,
Reply:er... i couldnt eat for an entire week (or maybe 2 weeks i forget)

puffiness also!

they never warned me! or else i probably would never have gotten it done lol
Reply:I got four wisdom teeth taken out at the same time. I was knock out for three days. I didn't feel any pain. I don't think that you should be feeling more pain as the days prolong. It should be healing and getting better. Go to the dentist and have him take a look at it again. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Reply:Depends if it is a surgical extraction or not. With a surgical extraction, the tooth or most of it is not exposed. With a regular extraction, the dentist would normally pull the gum away from the tooth and clamp onto it and pull, providing the root system was not a series of J's and hooks. Usually, pain will persist the following three days after an extraction of any kind. Expect to heal quickly. Also ask your dentist for a prescriptopn of Peridex.
Reply:Yep. Get a scrip for Vicodin. If they get stupid with you and deny this, make a pest of yourself and keep calling to let them know that the weak stuff they gave you doesn't work. Stick to your guns. Ever hear of Dr. Dean? He's the famous radio talk show doctor. When asked if he were stranded on a desert island and could have access to only one medication, he said "Vicodin". It has so many different uses besides pain, from cough control to 'regularity' if you eat something bad in a restraunt. So get your pain meds. You have a right to them.
Reply:I got 2 wisdom teeth out 2 days ago just with a local in the chair, and I have experienced similar pain to you. On the day they were extracted it was not really sore, then yesterday it felt more uncomfortable than painful, but today it is throbbing. My guess is that it is pretty typical, particularly given that we have the same sort of experiences.

Military healthcare question? Can my wife get a referal for Wisdom tooth extraction from the on base dentist.?

My wife is enrolled in tricare dental, but even with it the cost of wisdom tooth extraction will still probably be close to 800 dollars. I'm only an E-3 so 800 dollars is a huge chunk of my monthly pay. I got a referal from the on base dentist and it was paid for 100 percent. Will they allow spouses to get the same referals?

Military healthcare question? Can my wife get a referal for Wisdom tooth extraction from the on base dentist.?
Let me start by saying unfortunately there is a slim chance you're wife will be able to have her tooth extracted on base, most base facilities only cover the active duty member.

Regarding the $800, that seems very high even if it needs to be cut out, has she been seen by an oral surgeon? I ask, because you didn't say in your information. If that was a direct quote, I would see someone else. If not, one will see her for a free evaluation with a referral from her dentist. They can also let her know what your portion would be, if I remember correctly it's less than 40%.

Most oral surgeons also have financing plans available if it's too expensive, but there is one other option like someone else mentioned. You can go to your branch’s relief society, they give money assistance for things like this. However, before you can be given the money they make you take a budget class, no matter what your rank is.

I had to have all four of mine removed (two cut out, which is more costly than pulling) before the military would allow me to come overseas with my husband and the total cost was over $1200 and we had to pay only $300. I avoided having them removed for years because I was afraid of the actual cost out of our pocket, but it ended up not being too terribly much in the scheme of things.

Good luck with this and just ignore the people who feel they need to be rude and negative!
Reply:Ask the Dental people where you are Based...

Am sure that they will help as much as they can...
Reply:Like Marine says. ASK THE DENTAL PEOPLE. Why bother on here? Do you think people here know more?

Well I will tell you what LT. COL, as if, I retired long before TRICARE and holding the little troopies hands when they got wet diapers. Not sorry I missed it and officer like you.
Reply:I'm somewhat surprised by J%26amp;C H's answer. If the AF MSgt he is citing didn't know this, I cannot explain why: You can also talk to your first sergeant to see about AF Aid Society. They do emergency grants for these sorts of things.

If your wife is not seeing an in-network dentist, the cost is more. You may need to change dentists.

You should talk to the TriCare office on base. Are you active or reserves?
Reply:It can depend on the dentist that your spouse is going to and the facilities at the base. Some dentists who are prior military or Reserves often will have the authority to refer the patient to the base dentist when they have an opening. This in turn can take weeks or months before it is done so you are aware. It also doesn't necessarily mean that the base can do it, they can refer but that is it.

Now with the cost, it shouldn't be $800 for the wisdom teeth to be taken out. The most I was ever quoted was $600 and that was with all 4 taken out. It wasn't anywhere near the $1200 coverage either (your cost isn't included it in so if it is $600 for you and $600 for the dentist then that is it). Get a 2nd opinion and find out if a regular dentist can do it, not just a surgeon. I was told it would be necessary and got a 2nd opinion and it wasn't necessary. A regular dentist could do it for less than $200. So check around yourselves.

Also if it will cost this much and you don't have the funds to do it, then go see Navy Marine Corps Relief Society, Army Emergency Relief or whatever your branch has. They will usually loan you the money for this and it is interest free (or very low interest rate if they do charge interest).

Do I eat food when I have guage on my tooth after an extraction?

Stupid question I know

But I had a tooth extraction today on the back tooth next to the wisdom tooth and I'm unsure if I eat with the gauge in, or do I take it out?

Do I eat food when I have guage on my tooth after an extraction?
you can go ahead and take the gauze out. the only time you need to put it in is if the empty space starts to bleed again. mashed potatoes with gravy, jello, pudding and some soft macaroni are great to eat. tomorrow be sure to start gargling with warm salt water to help the hole close up. do that 2-3 times a day.
Reply:out
Reply:in

if it's still bleeding

you need to protect the site

change the gauze after you've eaten
Reply:As long as the spot is not longer bleeding, carefully take it out. Stick with soft foods for the next few days.
Reply:I don't think your suppose to eat it leads to infections. I think you're better of drink chamomille tea
Reply:maybe out..

go see a denist..
Reply:Take the gauze out for eating, stay on soft, cold foods for the 1st day (milkshakes-no straws-, applesauce, pudding, etc), then replace the gauze after you eat as long as you're still bleeding. Most people have some oozing for at least 6 hours.
Reply:I'd wait until the site has stopped bleeding so that you don't need the gauze in your mouth when you try to eat. That was what I did. And definitely stick with eating really mushy liquidy stuff.

I have to get a double root canal/bottom jaw/middle & tooth extraction wisdom upper jaw/same side, will ?

I most likely be alright by Wednesday? My app. is wed. for the tooth extraction, then a week or two for the 2 root canals

I was put on anti-biotics today. So I'm free from danger, right?

Yeah, I know I shouldn't have waited long, however I don't get tooth pain like most people, and if it does happen it's SO MILD!

Feeling weak but taking acidophilis, bromelain, vitamin C, bee pollen, multi vitamin, tea tonics (nettle leaf, milk thistle) and cod liver oil.

Rest + these are making me feel a lot better :o)

But still feel weak--do you think everything will be okay until Wednesday?

And if you ever had more than one rotten tooth in your mouth, such as the examples above, what was YOUR experience like? [hey, bet you never let that EVER happen again, lol! Yep, learned me lesson good]

I have to get a double root canal/bottom jaw/middle %26amp; tooth extraction wisdom upper jaw/same side, will ?
HELLO,

IT'S TOO BAD FOR EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO GET DONE. THE SUPPLEMENTS YOU'RE TAKING ARE GOOD, BUT THE ANBESOL IS A WASTE OF MONEY. IT'S ONLY GOOD FOR TEMPORARY RELIEF OF SOME GUM PAIN, BUT NOT FOR DENTAL PAIN.

YOU'LL BE OK FOR WED.
Reply:i had eight theeth and one root canal taken out in my bottom mouth at one time.it did not hurt until a few hours later.when it did hurt they said put a cold pack on your lip for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off and it worked.Good luck Wednesday.E-mail me if you want Wednesday after awhile to let me know how you came out.

When will I feel better after my wisdom tooth extraction?

I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth and it has been 2 days after surgery and my jaw is achy and stiff and I can't open my mouth far. When will it get better soon?

Also, I still have numbess on my chin because the roots hit my nerve. The surgeon said I will slowly get feeling back. Last night I noticed this intense iching on my chin..does this mean the nerve is healing?

When will I feel better after my wisdom tooth extraction?
I'm a dentist.

Soreness is perfectly normal two days after an extraction, especially a surgical extraction. Stiffness of the jaw can also be expected from extraction of wisdom teeth.

Your chin is still numb due to injury of the inferior alveolar nerve, which runs inside your mandible and often near the roots of the mandibular third molars (wisdom teeth).

The surgeon does not know for sure that you will regain sensation, but he/she is able to make a good estimate based on the type of injury your nerve most likely suffered.

Nerve injuries come in three classifications (known as the Seddon classification): 1. Neuropraxia, 2. Axonotmesis, and 3. Neurotmesis.

Neuropraxia is most often a crush-type injury that does not result in any loss of continuity of the nerve sheath or the axons themselves. Thus, healing is more rapid and most often complete.

Axonotmesis results in loss of continuity of the axons, while the nerve sheath remains intact. A phenomenon known as Wallarian degeneration occurs, where the axon distant to the injury basically dies off. Stretch injuries commonly cause this. These injuries tend to heal with mild deficit long-term, because the tracts along which the axons traveled are still intact and thus axons can grow back to their proper positions more easily. Axonal growth occurs, if memory serves, about a millimeter a day. Obviously, severity and various other factors can affect the outcome.

Neurotmesis is a complete severing of the nerve. Wallerian degeneration occurs. Obviously, since both the axons and the sheath (epineurium, perineurium, endoneurium) are all broken, healing is much more difficult for the nerve. The sheath must heal AND the proximal ends of the axons must find the "tubes" through which to grow and thus, depending on various factors, healing is often slow and more often than not incomplete--even with surgical intervention to approximate the two ends of the nerve.

The fact that you feel an intching sensation on your chin bodes well for your chances of a full recovery. In all honesty, axonotmetic and neurotmetic injuries of the inferior alveolar nerve are very rare from third molar extractions.
Reply:It depends on what you mean by sharp pains. Regardless, just give it time. You can (and should) have the doctor examine you and decide what to do. Report It

Reply:And all that for free! Report It

Reply:The itching could be an allergic reaction to the pain killers they gave you or the antibiotics as both contain sulfa. Contact your oral surgeon.
Reply:I had the same thing happen with my bottom wisdom teeth. I felt better after 3 or 4 days. It all depends on the severity of the surgery and your pain tolerance. The numbness on your chin will take a little longer though, probably a week or so. The itching is normal also, combination of healing and possibly a mild reaction to the anesthesia. You will feel better in a few days! Good luck!

How long should I have numbness after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had posted an earlier question about numbness after wisdom tooth extraction. I forgot to add the most important detail. It has been 1 month since, and I still have numbness in my lower lip area. It appears I have some nerve damage. The questions are how long should I expect this feeling to last? and Should I contact another dentist or oral surgeon? Is this permanent?

How long should I have numbness after wisdom tooth extraction?
You really got to contact who ever did the extraction for you. They must have damaged some parts of the nerve system. Normally, the numbness should be gone by about 2 hours, that's why they give you very strong pain killers. I'm only 13 and I got mine done; well, my mom's a dentist and she did it for me so if something was wrong it was easy for me to talk to. You really urgently need to go see your dentist, and also maybe your doctor (if it is a bad nerve damage). Good Luck! xoxo
Reply:I would contact whoever did the extractions. In your lower jaw (mandible) there is a nerve that runs the length of your jaw and can sometimes be damaged during surgery causing temporary or permenent numbness.
Reply:In my case, it was more pain than I can ever imagine, as all 4 were removed at one sitting. I really don't remember any numbness after the pain decreased.

Best check with your dentist and/or the oral surgeon who did the operation.
Reply:Yeah, that's really not right. Start with the dentist/oral surgeon who did the extraction, and if they just blow you off or tell you to wait, then go somewhere else. Numbess should've disappeared as soon as the anesthesia wore off. If it's nerve damage, as sounds likely, it may never go away. But it's possible it's something they can fix by going back in (depends what happened).

Good luck.
Reply:Contact whoever did the extraction. They will have the answer you need.
Reply:To answer your questions: The paresthsia you're experiencing is not necesarily permanent. It may last several more months before resolving, and the resolution may very well be complete restoration of normal sensation. I think talking to a maxillofacial surgeon would be advisable. Best of luck to you!
Reply:Get a hold of the person that did the extractions for you. There is obviously something not right going on there!

Where can i find a Oral Surgeon (OMFS) for wisdom tooth extraction?

or is just a Dentist (BDS) okay? I have learnt that an Oral Surgeon (OMFS) is more qualified and specilised in dealing with tooth extraction than a dentist (BDS).

Due to the potential complications like damage to nerve endings by a wisdom tooth extraction surgery, i would rather play the safe card.

do you think it's worth the cost (which i assume is more expensive?) to find a oral surgeon to perform the surgery? if so, where can i find one? it seems in most clinics they are all dentists not oral surgeon. Thanks

Normally your dentist will hook you up with an Oral Surgery place... However, if not, you can always search online or flip through the yellow pages.
Reply:800 DENTIST ... just tell them what they you want / tell them your insurance, they will do a search and give you the choices in your area.
Reply:if it is a top tooth them they are very good when coming out i have only have a few patients when it have broken.

lower tooth can sometime be a pain but only sometime.

any dentist can do the job ask your dentist and sometime they may sent you to max-fax

Can i drink alchohol after a wisdom tooth extraction?

i had my top left wisdom tooth extracted on tuesday. and the dentist told me that it stopped bleeding roughly at his lunchtime, so when i left the practice i knew it hadnt stopped bleeding, safe to say my letter of complaint is in the post and i wont be goin back there!, so i went along to the emergency dentist where i had 3 stitches, wednesday it stopped bleeding, thursday, when i woke up i coughed and out came a blod clot from the extraction area, i have been spitting to see if its still bleeding. but i was told today to stop doing that! the swelling has gone down finally. i was just wondering if i can drink alcohol. not go mad just have a few beers or spirits, i have stopped smoking because i know that defo dont help.

Can i drink alchohol after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Well done for not smoking- particularly as you have had secondary bleeding. You need to give you mouth a chance to heal. The tobacco toxins would irritate the socket and prevent that.

Please do not drink alcohol. It is not at all advisable and am sure emergency dentist would confirm this. Why undo all the good work he/she has done? Not only that, imagine it starts bleeding again and you are under the influence of alcohol?

Did the original dentist or emergency dentist give you an advice sheet with "dos and do nots" ?

I recommend you wait until another 48 hours and give your body a chance to clot the blood in the socket correctly.

PS. the stitches will definitely not dissolve.
Reply:not for 48 hours after the bleeding has stoped
Reply:Y not?
Reply:Unless you want a world of hurt, don't drink after a wisdom tooth extraction. Your body still needs to heal after what amounts to surgery. Lay off the spirits for a while until you are absolutely certain that you are healed.

Help! Do you have any natural/organic remedies for a tooth extraction infection?

Four days ago I had a wisdom tooth pulled. Somewhat of 'botched' job. During the extraction, the tooth broke. Bone was shaved and tissue cut in order to facilitate extraction (not fun). An infection ensued - resulting in a swollen jaw (also not fun). Chosen remedy: Allow body to heal itself via... Fairly high strength Colloidal Silver (actually 'Ionic Silver' @ aprox. 15 - 20 PPM) several times a day, nutritious organic meals, organic fruits/veggies, great amounts of salt water, vitamin supplements, rest, etc. I also use an excellent, affordable cleaning device called, 'ShowerPik' and have tried a similar item called, 'ShowerFloss' (also good, I own both). I am avoiding mainstream pharmaceuticals (root word, 'Pharmacia' = Sorcery), which includes typical prescription antibiotics. Am looking for other natural/organic remedies to alleviate this ailment. If you know of any, or have had a similar experience, please share - ASAP. HELP!!!.. and thanks. %26gt;_~ I will post my results here later.

Help! Do you have any natural/organic remedies for a tooth extraction infection?
Tea Tree Oil.

As a mouthwash...2 drops to a glass of water.

If possible 1 drop directly on the affected area, using cotton bud or finger.

It should help with the pain and will definitely sort the infection.

Hope you are feeling better very soon
Reply:salt water is good but depends how far it's got ,from what you have said about the tooth breaking mabe some tooth could be left in the gum and it cant heal with it there give it a while then i would go back and request an x-ray good luck i feel for y ou nothing like a pain in the mouth
Reply:No. You need to call the dentist and have them give you an antibiotic. They can call it in.

YOU also screwed this up with your crazy healing techniques. You are not supposed to use anything like a Water pick when you just had an extraction. And colloidal silver? Good grief.

Call the dentist, get the antibiotic and stop trying to self-treat with your hookie, unproven, WITCHCRAFT.

How much bleeding should I have after Tooth Extraction....?

I had a tooth extraction/bone graft done on the last upper molar right hand side. It has been about 24 hours now and it is still bleeding. How long should I expect this heavy bleeding to occur?

How much bleeding should I have after Tooth Extraction....?
if it is just oozing you are ok (don't forget when blood mixes with saliva it looks like there is a LOT of blood).

If you are still have to bite on the gauze and every 20 min it comes out soaked heavily with blood, you should contact your dentist.

In 24 hours your bleeding should be minimal to simple oozing.
Reply:It should not still be bleeding. The clot has obviously dislodged so I suggest you go back to your dentist straight away.
Reply:You should probably give a call to the dentist's office. My surgeon was very agreeable to answering questions after I had my teeth extracted.
Reply:The bleeding usually stops within 15-30 min ,though minor spotting remains . If U r bleeding actively even r 24 hrs may be there is some infection or ur bleeding %26amp; clotting time may be on higher side. Did it was checked before extraction if not get it doen bleeding time is 2- 5 min %26amp; clotting time when blood clogs %26amp; stop bleeding is 3 - 8 min usually. If BT %26amp; CT are normal get ur platelet count done ,low platelet may cause prolongation of bleeding.
Reply:it can ooze for up to a couple days. it's gonna bleed a little more if you take an aspirin everyday or anything else that thins your blood. make sure you don't drink through straws or smoke. also make sure to take it easy following an extraction. the more active you are the more likely it is to bleed. this is very normal and you have nothing to worry about.
Reply:it shouldnt last that long i had my four back teeth pulled at one time and with all four of them they only bleed for about half hout to an hour call your dentist before u get an air bubble in the gums

Having had a really bad infection just like this. I suggest seeing your Doctor. I ended up with an abcess %26amp; lockjaw with painful spasms. In the hospital for 4 days...

I am not a big fan of medicine either but the infection can spread to your brain...
Reply:So sorry you had such trouble, but teeth that abscess and decay do break many times when being extracted, the tooth was damaged to begin with! Now face it--YOU'VE gone overboard! Anything taken to such extremes is ridiculous! Now--You had the tooth extracted and didn't rely on a Cobra from planet extractor to do the job did you? So be sane and get on the phone and ask your Oral Surgeon to prescribe pain medication and antibiotic to reduce swelling and pain as well. Unless you have a factory and access to all botany necessary to concoct needed antibiotics and pain relief give up this silliness! And the shower pik will harm the extraction cavity! You probably BLEW the blood clot to KINGDOM COME! And caused a dry socket! Now smarten up! Good luck.
Reply:Tea tree oil and silver and/or sea salt water and swish with it.1Tspoon of salt to 1 cup of warm water. Also for pain use clove oil. Take lots of Vit C because it helps fight infection. Hope this helps!
Reply:Pack the wound with Echinacea/Goldenseal. (you can buy it in capsule form and just break them open) Cover with cotton (like a patch of cheesecloth) Change 5 - 6 X daily. Gargle with sea salt in between. Also take the echinacea/goldenseal internally 3 caps 3X a day.

If it doesn't get better in a few days, go see a doctor. They aren't ALL bad.

Good luck!
Reply:The best advice that I can give you is gargle with salt water, the salt will help control the infection and will draw it out. I would use warm water.

Does this sound like an exposed nerve after wisdom tooth extraction?

Hello

I had my botton right wisdom tooth removed well over a month ago now and for the first 2 weeks i had pain , earache , jawache , %26amp; it felt like my tooth was still there and throbbing , i think i may have had a mild dry socket but for the past 3 days whenever i eat or drink hot / cold food i get a wicked pain like a toothache same spot as before earache is horrible plus jawache , pain shooting up into my head causes me to have headaches often, i take pain killers for it as the pain goes away pretty much straight away when it has kicked in , when the tablets ware off i can be pain free for the rest of the day , i have noticed bending down causes the pain to come on and mainly with hot and cold too.

Does this sound like nerve damage from tooth extraction ?

also i have noticed the hole seems more open than it was last week strange to me.

i never eat sweets but the past few days i have been eating a couple a day , i wonder have i causes the hole to open up in anyway

thx

Does this sound like an exposed nerve after wisdom tooth extraction?
You could have dry socket

Or the tooth next to the extracted tooth could be infected. Call your dentist
Reply:i think so, go back to your dentist and have it checked.
Reply:what happens when your tooth is extracted a clot forms. And it is common if you lose part or all of that clot you will have pain called a dry socket. It then needs to be packet with a medication to help the healing process. While its is healing the hole needs to then feel in and close after one month it is still healing. But the cold hot sensation your feeling can only be from a nerve in the tooth . The pain may be coming from the tooth next to it causing a referral pain. Go back to you Dr and see if the packing still needs to be done or if another tooth is causing the pain.

Is it normal for tooth next to removed tooth to hurt and be wobbly when touched after tooth extraction?

I Have just 4 perfectly fine teeth removed too make room as prep for braces. One of them was digged out because get broken during extraction. I have some stitches. I notice that tooth next to it hurts and rocks when touched. Probably it was some pressure applied on it when removing nr 4 on lower left. Is this tooth nr 3 going to be OK in place. What should I do?

Is it normal for tooth next to removed tooth to hurt and be wobbly when touched after tooth extraction?
I had the exact problem.

When a tooth is extracted is causes inflamation in the surrounding nerves and often causes refered pain to nearby teeth. I have had severe refered pain; not fun :(

BUT it is NOT normal for the tooth to be moving or "rocking".

Please call your dentist asap and I'm sure they will sort it out for you.
Reply:Yes, the pressure from the removal causes swelling in the ligament. It will tighten up and get more comfortable. (but then the braces will go on and make them wobbly and tender all over again!)
Reply:THIS TOOTH WILL GET FIRMER WITH TIME, THERE'S

NOTHING YOU CAN DO FOR THIS.

What's normal after having a tooth extraction?

I had my bottom right wisdom tooth taken out yesterday. My dentist gave me meltable stitches, and the that was it.

I wanted to know what to expect, what's normal, what's not normal. Here's a rundown of what's going on:

1. I am oozing a little bit of blood. Nothing major. I had gauze in it and then when I took it out this morning, it was little bit yellow and had a very bad odor.

2. My saliva has had a bad odor since the extraction. Is this normal.

3. Uncontrollable saliva. I have been like a water fountain with saliva. Every time I turn around I need to spit (yes i do it carefully).

I may be freaking over nothing, but I would like to know what I am to expect and everything.

Thanks. I would prefer dental professionals to answer, but if you have had the same experience I would like to hear from you too.

What's normal after having a tooth extraction?
What To Expect After Surgery

In most cases, the recovery period lasts only a few days. Take painkillers as prescribed by your dentist or oral surgeon. The following tips will help speed your recovery.

Bite gently on the gauze pad periodically, and change pads as they become soaked with blood. Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you still have bleeding 24 hours after your surgery.

While your mouth is numb, be careful not to bite the inside of your cheek or lip, or your tongue.

Do not lie flat. This may prolong bleeding. Prop up your head with pillows.

Try using an ice pack on the outside of your cheek for the first 24 hours. You can use moist heat-such as a washcloth soaked in warm water and wrung out-for the following 2 or 3 days.

Relax after surgery. Physical activity may increase bleeding.

Eat soft foods, such as gelatin, pudding, or a thin soup. Gradually add solid foods to your diet as healing progresses.

Do not use a straw for the first few days. Sucking on a straw can loosen the blood clot and delay healing.

After the first day, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day to reduce swelling and relieve pain.

Do not smoke for at least 24 hours after your surgery. The sucking motion can loosen the clot and delay healing. In addition, smoking decreases the blood supply and can bring germs and contaminants to the surgery area.

Avoid rubbing the area with your tongue or touching it with your fingers.

Continue to brush your teeth and tongue carefully.

Your dentist will remove the stitches after a few days, if needed.

After a wisdom tooth is removed, you may experience:

Pain and swelling in your gums and tooth socket where the tooth was removed.

Bleeding that won't stop for about 24 hours.

Difficulty with or pain from opening your jaw (trismus).

Slow-healing gums.

Damage to existing dental work, such as crowns or bridges, or to roots of a nearby tooth.

A painful inflammation called dry socket, which happens if the protective blood clot is lost too soon.

Numbness in your mouth and lips after the local anesthetic wears off, due to injury or inflammation of nerves in the jaw.

Rare side effects, including:

Numbness in the mouth or lips that does not go away.1

A fractured jaw if the tooth was firmly attached to the jaw bone.

An opening into the sinus cavity when a wisdom tooth is removed from the upper jaw.

(thanks for answering my question)
Reply:Sounds quite normal to me.

I've had 2 removed. About the only thing you really notice once the pain and oozing goes away, is, you tend to stick your tongue in the hole, alot.
Reply:Sounds pretty damn normal to me. :)
Reply:Thats pretty normal.

But you are not supposed to spit for atleast the first 24 hours. It may lead to dislodgement of clot and result in dry socket.

other dont's are,

1. Do not explore the area with your tongue or any other thing, let it heal peacefully

2. from 2nd day onwards you can do warm saline gargling- but lightly.

3. eat soft foods

4. cold foods

Accidentally ripped tea bag after wisdom tooth extraction.?

After following advice I found online, I put a moist tea bag on wisdom tooth extraction site. One of the teabags ripped and now I have a piece of tea on the clot. will this be a problem? should I have my dentist remove it?

Accidentally ripped tea bag after wisdom tooth extraction.?
The reason for the teabag is to help blood to clot in the area. Rinsing the area would not be a great idea especially if the extraction was within the last 24-48 hours. Wait a couple of days to let the body heal, flushing the area too soon can cause you to washout any clot that may have formed and tea leaves rinse out very easily on their own anyway. If you were using the teabag but were not really having any clotting issues you can gently rinse with some salt water and stop using the teabags. Call your dentist to follow up. They may recommend an irrigation syringe after several days to help keep the area free of any food particles and this too will help speed healing

Nerve, ear and sinus cavity damage from attempted upper left wisdom tooth extraction?

I am 46 years old and two years ago I had a dentist attempt to pull my upper left wisdom tooth. After about three minutes of the dentist pulling and twisting on the tooth I had to stop him because the tooth was not moving and he was twisting my jaw so much that I told him I thought he was going to fracture my jaw. After a few months I began to notice physical problems that I link to this attempted extraction. Nerve twitching and mild pain in my upper left temple area, full blown sinusitis and a "fluttering" irritation/sensation in my left ear drum triggered by certain sounds. I had the wisdom tooth extracted by an oral surgeon 18 months ago, but these problems have not resolved/healed themselves. Can anyone confirm that these problems can be caused by such an attempted extraction? Can bone damage between the ear and sinus cavity be repaired? Have drugs like Neurontin and Lyrica been effective in treating such nerve damage? Any input on this is much appreciated. Thanks!

Nerve, ear and sinus cavity damage from attempted upper left wisdom tooth extraction?
what you are experiencing is sometimes refered to as (oral facial tmj) temporomandibular joint pain. if you have experienced pain in the ear, neck jaw. or migraines, or headaches period. dizziness, etc; please contact your family physician asap in reference to these symptoms. and a medical lawyer, what was done to you is also being done to other's. as an intelligent individual, you must put a stop to it before someone is seriously injured. do your research and get your facts straight b-4 you decide to present them to your doctor. I want you to educate yourself on what has been done to you so that when you approach another health practioner, you will be forarmed and forwarned. and unable to be lead like a lamb to the slaughter about what is being done to your person. the balls in your court.
Reply:u signed a waiver didn't you read it? sorry i don't know about the drugs.
Reply:first thing i would do is get me a lawyer, a dentist should never attempt this, an oral surgeon should always be the one you see for an extraction, i dont know your answer to the drug part, but yeah man, you can suffer all kinds of damage from someone who doesnt quite know what they are doing trying to extract your tooth, see, the trying too part should of been your wake up call, even an experienced oral surgeon runs into trouble some times.............

Has anyone had this happen with their tooth extraction?

This is the third day since I had my upper left molar extracted. I havent had any pain since I left the dentists office.Ive taken my pain medication and penicillin as I was advised to. Today when I look at the space where my tooth was I see a hole (which is logical) which had nothing in it but it is white around it a little bit. Does anyone know if this is normal?I dont have any pain I just wanted to know if this is normal.

I talked to my dentist on the phone and he said that The white appearance of the skin is not abnormal at all. In extraction areas the surface gum tissue begins to shed the top cells and this produces the white appearance. This is why it is important to do warm salt water rinses a few times a day after extractions to keep the area clean. Can anyone verify this?I realize Im being paranoid but I dont want to get an infection or dry socket

Has anyone had this happen with their tooth extraction?
I do remember my gums being a bit white when they were healing from the extractions(I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled in 1 day) when I brushed my gums %26amp; peroxided %26amp; salt watered my mouth it felt so much better because I was in some serious pain. If you are really worried just go back to your dentist %26amp; have him check you out.
Reply:yes the white is completely normal. just keep rinsing with warm salt water. you sound like you are healing just fine!!!
Reply:I had some white around the holes when I had my wisdom teeth out, and no problem with dry socket or anything.

You'll be fine. Though calling your dentist was a good idea. They're there to help, after all. If it continues to hurt for a long time, or increases in pain dramatically, or looks radically different suddenly, you could always go in and have them peek in your mouth to check. It shouldn't take too long and heck, they probably won't charge you just to peek.

What is the recovery time for a difficult wisdom tooth extraction?

I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth by an oral surgeon. The procedure lasted over an hour and consisted of the dentist drilling little pieces of my tooth off to get it out. (the tooth was in down under the skin sideways near my jaw)

My jaw is also so achy and I am still on soft foods (I can't even eat noodles!). I tried but today I am paying for it. I had the tooth out on Friday and I didn't go to work today. How long will I be out for? I am 28yrs old..not a teen

What is the recovery time for a difficult wisdom tooth extraction?
it'll be a week or two if everything heals well and you dont get an infection.....definitely do not smoke bongs, the suction will give you a very painful condition called dry socket that is the most painful thing i ever endured
Reply:Give yourself a day or two more, then call your doctor if you still don't feel better. You had major surgery and it won't heal overnight.
Reply:at least a week, before you can even think about getting better...but your mouth will never feel the same again...
Reply:I had the exact same thing, they actually had to break the tooth in three places and then pull the pieces out because it had hooked through my jaw. You'll probably be tender for the rest of the week, but I was back to work in a few days. Just pack soup and jello. Sorry man, that sucks.
Reply:It took me about 2 days and that's mostly because of bleeding that occured, which isn't anything more than annoying. I didn't need the pain medication they gave me so I wouldn't expect a long recovery time.
Reply:Had this question the other day. The site below should help you. I had 4 out. No complications but it was painful. Good meds should help. Also before I chewed on pineapple core to reduce the swelling incurred from the surgery. Even after I put pineapple core next to the gums. It made me feel better. It took about 10 days for me to recover. Good luck and hope you feel better!
Reply:When I had my four removed two years ago I was 21. I took and much vitamin C as I could it seemed to heel up faster. I could not take the pain killers so I heard lavender oil would remove the pain.
Reply:Everyone has different reaction to pain, and every extraction is different. It took me two days but my teeth weren't very impacted and I have a high tolerence for pain. Most people I know (myself included) have had their wisdom teeth out on Friday so they can be at work on Monday so two days is pretty much the norm, but the procedure you described sounds pretty extreme so it may be longer.

Have you reported that your are still experiencing numbness to your dentist? I'm sure he'd tell you to avoid chewing anything to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or lip. Three days seems like a long time to not get the feeling back.

Hole remains in gum nearly 1 year after wisdom tooth extraction.?

I had two of my wisdom teeth extracted nearly a year ago. One was poking out and was a breeze compared to the other which was hidden deep. The hidden one obviously hurt much more than the other during recovery but all went well, so I was told. A week or so after the extraction I had my stiches taken out...I felt that it might have been too soon for them to be taken out, at least on the side of the hidden tooth...but couldn't stand the feeling of them anymore so just went ahead without saying anything. Time passed and the one tooth (the easy one) healed over and all is well, but the hidden one never quite healed over. Months passed, and now nearly a year, and there is still a hole from where the tooth was removed. No pain at all, just a hole that collects food and who knows what. I called the surgeon's office once and they said it takes time, but how long? I would like to go back to their office and make them look, but can't as I live in FL now, far from VT. What do I do?

Hole remains in gum nearly 1 year after wisdom tooth extraction.?
Leaving sutures in place for more than a week can actually worsen a problem because they are no longer needed to hold the healing tissue together and act as a foreign body. I always remove sutures (in the mouth) after 5 days. So you weren't wrong to get them out.

This hole is, I'm sorry to say, normal anatomy if the tooth you had removed was deeply buried. After a year it is unlikely that you will get much more bone remodelling and you will either have to live with it or have a surgeon remodel the bone (which is not difficult, incidentally). In any event it is important that you use a single-tufted toothbrush every day to clean the hole out.

I know this is an annoying problem, but will not cause any long-term harm.

I hope this helps.
Reply:You should get that checked out...I don't think that should be...I've had all four of mine removed and the hole closed..he may have not stitched you up right...get it checked out ASAP
Reply:Go to the dentist, then go to a doctor for a diabetes check. I had one pulled and it did the same thing then I went into diabetic coma due to high blood sugar....Diabetes causes slow or no healing...Be checked
Reply:yes
Reply:yes, that is the common dilemma to everyone having his tooth extracted. but i tell you, it will heal over time. those inner teeth that are extracted normally takes long time to flatten because it is not normally exposed for chewing foods.eventhough we don't want our gums to be used in chewing, it is actually good if you want to flatten it out andmake the tooth hole disappear.
Reply:I reckon the first answer is right you know, they may well have failed to suture the hole properly. Go to a GP for a health and diabetes check as the second answer says, it won't do any harm! But if there is no infection or problem I reckon it might be that its healed like that
Reply:SOMETIMES IT TAKE THE AREA A LONG TIME TO EVEN OUT TO A FLAT SYMETRY. JUST KEEP THE AREA CLEAN.
Reply:hi

you probably lost some bone when the tooth was extracted, maybe it was a traumatic extraction,i suspect it will heal on its own.if not you could visit an oral surgeon who will x ray and check it.he may advise to make some bone augmentation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for self extraction of a chipped tooth?

I have to pull this tooth it hurts more and more and I think it might get infected. I have no money or insurance so I don't know what else to do. I tried to use plyers but its in there so tight. Should I cut through the gum and what can I use to prevent infection besides peroxide. And is there anything that could tenderize the gums so it might loosen up. It feels like I could crush it with the plyers and that would bad. Is there anyone out there that is not quite a dentist and needs some one to practice on? It hurts so bad I am thinking of getting myself convicted cause I think they might do it Im not sure. Its hard to concentrate and think logically right now but I am going crazy and I need to do something. What did people do before dentistry? Please punch me in the face lower left side knock my tooth out. Mental Dental caveman tooth extraction. I'll borrow money from the mob. What should I do cut the gum should I get drunk first then I will slip and cut my whole mouth open.

Does anyone have any suggestions for self extraction of a chipped tooth?
Do not pull it out yourself. It will get infected. Go and get some clove oil from the pharmacy. That will numb the tooth instantly then go to hospital. If you pull it out yourself you will prob faint with the pain and then you will be in a very sticky situation....
Reply:If you are in that much pain, it's probably already infected. If you pull it while infected, you will release the germs into your body. NOT GOOD. If you do it your self, you likely will break off the tooth. This will result in immediate and constant pain, and a much more expensive process.

go to a dentist. Many will allow you to pay a few dollars a week. If you are near a dental school, you might get it done for free. If you live in a large city, there are dental clinics that will charge based on income. DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF
Reply:If you go to any E.R they will remove it for you and bill you later- trust me you rather worry about that bill later than an infected mouth. Don't pull it yourself!
Reply:Attempting to extract the tooth yourself can lead to additional problems for you... the 'top' of the tooth may come out, but you may end up leaving the roots in place, since they're supported by the bone. No matter how much you 'slice and dice' yourself, you won't get access to the roots.

Find a dental school near you. If that is not an option, call a dentist for an emergency visit, and tell them you are in severe pain. Chances are they won't refuse you, and hopefully they'll be able to make some kind of payment arrangements with you.

If you wait, and the tooth is infected, it can travel further into your body, making matters even worse..

Good luck.
Reply:The words "self" and "extraction" should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER go together!!!!! I am a dentist and I'd never even THINK about trying that on myself!

Go to an emergency room near you.
Reply:I agree with teethdoc, I am a dentist myself and even I would never consider self extraction and I have all of the instruments to perform it. Extraction of a tooth a home almost always leads to infection which can is not only excruciating pain but can also prove to be fatal if left untreated. Do yourself a HUGE favor and have this tooth pulled by a dentist, he/she will numb your gums with a Lidocaine injection and will pull the tooth correctly.

How long should I have pain after tooth extraction/ bone graft?

I had a tooth extraction and bone graft done on the top back molar (next to where my wisdom teeth would be) about 48 hours ago. I am in excruciating pain and nothing is working. I have been given vicodin es and motrin 800. I have been icing it and everything else they told me to do. Is there anything else i can do to releive it?

Question about eating after a tooth extraction?

I developed an infection in a wisdom tooth 2 days ago, and this afternoon I had an emergency extraction. I am in so much pain, but I AM STARVING! I have not eaten since the pain began! I know they say not to eat for a certain period of time, and then when you do, only soft foods. It's only been 2 hours since the bastard was yanked out, is there anything at all I could safely eat this soon? Anything besides broth? *ack*

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Question about eating after a tooth extraction?
I also had an emergency extraction on my wisdom tooth and I was in killer pain but I still ate anything I wanted....as long as you smash it up a bit or put it through the blender. Eat anything you want just make sure that you cut it in tiny bits and then smush it up into a ball that you can nibble at with the good side!

I know you're really hungry, but NIBBLING will allow you to eat anything you want buddy...just nibble really slow...I got away with eating a hamburger a few hours after my surgery, I just had to nibble it and it took me about 30 minutes to eat it, but trust me, it works....

But, If you are really really hurting badly and the pain killers aren't kicking in yet because it may take a few hours for them to kick in full force, then just maybe try for now:

yogurt

applesauce

pudding

mashed potatoes

fruit smoothie

cooked noodles

scrambled eggs

But, for about 2 days eat kind of gently and slowly so you don't pull the clot out of the gum area.
Reply:food particles can get in the socket and it will become.. abscessed.. Report It

Reply:ice cream?
Reply:Anything that is soft and not too strongly flavoured. Soup is a good plan though... If you chew on the other side then you'll probably be ok, just make sure that you don't get any food stuck in there cos you'll cause infection.
Reply:anything you dont have to chew will be fine. mash up some bananas, anything soft to begin with, or add crushed crackers to your broth. it makes it taste lots better
Reply:When I got mine out I ate about 2 and a half hours after, You can eat mashed potatoes and maybe some pudding or Jello! Or even a nice milk shake!
Reply:All of these answers are good. Don't forget the Popsicles!!
Reply:Jello, pudding, milk shakes, protein shakes, mashed potatoes from KFC... soft stuff. You don't want anything with particles that could get wedged into the big hole where your tooth was and cause infection or more bleeding.

It's probably good to call the office where you had the extraction done and ask them if they're not closed for the evening.

Don't forget to ice it! An ice pack on your cheek will reduce swelling and pain and make it heal much faster.
Reply:Ice cream, mashed potatoes, yogurt! You should eat only soft things because you don't want to remove the blood that has clotted in the extraction site because then you will get a dry socket and that will hurt really bad and it will take longer for the gums to heal. Good Luck and I hope you get to eat something good soon.

Are there any health benefits associated with wisdom tooth extraction?

i feel pressure on either side of my jaw. my wisdom teeth have not fully come through as my mouth is crowded. i read that certain symptoms can be relieved through wisdom tooth extraction. what feeling in my jaw can i expect after extraction?

Are there any health benefits associated with wisdom tooth extraction?
If you're under 30, get it done now. I'm 41 and only just had mine removed in Germany. Dentist here told me that they should have been extracted when I was in my twenties when the teeth and surrounding bone are much softer and easier to remove. But thanks to our British government at that time trying to save money, they told dentists not to take wisdom teeth out! Result.... the most painful experience I've ever had! Seems your really too old at 40+ for this, very risky ( one reason why they wont use a general anaesthetic) and the teeth have become very hard, which makes them brittle and they break into pieces when they try to pull them so lots of drilling into your jaw etc. Took about an hour a tooth! But, after effects not too bad, you look like a hamster for up to a week but the swelling goes down quite quickly ( use plenty of ice packs) As someone else pointed out, it's being left with the holes in your face that make it difficult to eat without getting stuff in them. So, get it done, sooner rather than later, it's much better than the constant aching in your jaw and skull and facing something like medieval torture a few years down the line. Best of luck!
Reply:I had one removed - it had no effect on sensation.

It's just there's an annoying hole for a couple of years, which food (e.g. bread) gets stuck in!
Reply:Pain, followed by numbness, due to all the great pills you'll get.
Reply:i had all 4 ov my wisdom teeth out a few months ago,i was put to sleep 4 it and when i woke up i couldnt talk or eat 4 a while but after an hour i was well enough to leave hospital and i would do it again in a flash if i had to as now im not in no pain wot so ever
Reply:I had two wisdom teeth removed when I was in my early twenties for the same reason. I looked like a hamster for a while after, but it was a good move.
Reply:besides relieving the pressure you feel your teeth will now be free to grow less crowded and not so prone to cavaties inbetween them,, straighter more even teeth for better health, eating and smiling,,, wisdom teeth are like the appendix,,, not sure what the function was but can do with out,,,good luck
Reply:relief usualy followa extraction......i just had tooth out and once its dun you feel more relaxed.gum will feel squigy and yuk but try leave it alone.best to just chiil out relax and take some paracetamol.good luk
Reply:I have been extracted my wisdom tooth on my left which causing the pain all the time and my wisdom doesn't show up but is inside my gum only x-ray able to appear... Well after the extraction and the numbness goes off i really feel discomfort but my Dr advice to take ice-cream or ice pack to place on my cheek to reduce the pain plus with medication as well...

The swollen subside in 1 weeks time..

Pieces of bone coming up 6 months after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted back in April. The holes have been healing nicely so far. I noticed last week that I have what seems like a sliver of bone or tooth that has come up thru one of the extraction sites. It doesn't hurt at all but it is hard to leave it alone! Is this something that normally happens after a wisdom tooth extraction? I called the oral surgeon and he didn't seem concerned. He said I could let it work itself out on it's own or I could try and pull it out myself. I'm scared to pull it out for fear that I'll do something to hurt myself. Anyone ever have these? Did you pull them out yourself or go back to the oral surgeon?

Pieces of bone coming up 6 months after wisdom tooth extraction?
Mostly likely these are bone spicules that are working themselves out of the tissue. Very rarely, almost never, are any tooth pieces left in the mouth. Slowly they will come to the surface, and you can either pull them out with tweezers, or go to the OS and they will pull them out. Don't worry, good luck!!
Reply:If it was me... I would just go back and have him remove it!
Reply:My wife works for a dentist and he said this is normal especially if the extractions were difficult. They are not attached to anything... They are only root fragments that got missed in the blood and tissue. They should work out on their own. If you try to pull them and they hurt, stop. If they are not gone in another few weeks see your regular dentist.
Reply:Don't fiddle with it with your fingers. It might infect the site. Your gums will push it up on their own, and brushing/flossing will help work it out. Besides, your Curious Tongue will fiddle with it all day.
Reply:This can happen if all the pieces of your teeth were not completely removed when they were extracted. It is normal, it's something the body does to expell foreign matter. It happened when my arm went through a glass window. The doctor tried to take as much of the glass out as possible, but he told me there still might be some left cuz glass is hard to see. A little while (1 to 2 months) after that, I noticed there were pieces of glass coming out of my skin. You will not hurt yourself by pulling the pieces out, although it might be painful. There will be healed skin underneath it. If it is painful, just leave it alone. It will come out on its own eventually!!
Reply:I had the same problem. I had oral surgery last week and had the bone removed. The surgery only took about 10 mins. I did get stitches so I couldn't eat anything solid for a couple of days. I was home from work for 2 days. I tried to let them work there way out but they got bigger and more soreness started. Good Luck

I have a major tooth extraction dental surgery tomorrow... will i die?
Hey, my son had 2 wisdom teeth cut out when he was 17. He was petrified of the dentist until that day. Now, he said that the stuff that they use to make you relax was so good, that he wants to go back for more.LOL. He's lucky that I know he's only joking. Honestly, he's not scared anymore. Relax, you'll be fine.
Reply:no sweety
Reply:no

Plus ur going to be asleep during the sergury just tell them to sleep you early haha
Reply:You're going to be okay. They wouldn't do the surgery if they thought you'd die. Nothing's going to happen. Just clear your mind.
Reply:naw, you wont die.you're gonna be fine
Reply:Just hope the anesthesia works wonders..........
Reply:No, you will not die.

The nice thing about major dental work is that they will probably give you a nice sedative (like IV valium) or at least nitrous oxide.

I do not like the dentist either, and though I generally am not a drug-taker, Loooo--ooove the Nitrous oxide. It actually makes the dentist a fun experience.
Reply:I doubt it. Just breathe the gas and you won't care.
Reply:Relax, everything will work out just fine.
Reply:Dentists today are so precise and quick that you hardly feel a thing. At least it has been that way in all of my recent tooth extractions.
Reply:You will be fine!! I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled last year and I had never had a tooth pulled before in my whole life. The dentist pulled them in his office the same day! I was scared to death, but it was not bad at all. I thought I would have black eyes and everything, but NOT!! You will be fine too. Good Luck!!
Reply:Dying is VERY unlikely. However your mouth is going to hurt for a day as the original painkiller wears off and you will need a prescription for something you can take at home to get rid of the ache of the extraction.

Tooth extraction is very common and complications are very rare. You need not be that anxious although tomorrow will not be the best day of your week.
Reply:You have to suck it up and remain positive. I know it's a bit scarey, but it's usually not as bad as we build it up to be. Tell your dentist your phobia, and let him/her decide which is the best agent to use for numbing, sleep, etc.

Those of us like you and me, fret and freak and get ourselves all worked up, and when the procedure is over we realize it wasn't all that bad,,, the hardest part is the stuff we put ourselves through worrying about it.
Reply:No, don't worry about it. Deep breath and get good rest, you'll be fine.
Reply:lets hope not dentist scare me too
Reply:Probably.
Reply:I survived. I was freaking out like you but it's been 2 weeks and it's only a distant memory. I promise you won't die so relax buddy. You've got my word!

No pain after wisdom tooth extraction?

is it normal to not have ANY pain after wisdom tooth(upper left) extraction? it has been 6 1/2 hr since.

No pain after wisdom tooth extraction?
Thanks for asking. My family story just will not go away. It answers your question perfectly, though.

I removed two of my older daughter's wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she'd be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.

Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn't even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn't last for more than 3 or 4 days.

With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn't want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don't remember the details.)

I'm not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

Also, see http://www.webmd.com/hw/dental/tm6328.as...
Reply:It won't be so bad as you think. You'll be fine.
Reply:do not know if it is "normal" or not, but i had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted, and never had any pain or discomfort. Just be thankful you are not in pain!
Reply:When I had my wisdom teeth removed I even had to have part of the bone removed as well. I had stiches and very deep holes in my jaw, and I swear, it didn't hurt very much at all. Maybe just a dull ache, but plain aspirin took care of it.... good luck
Reply:I would say yes it is normal, you shouldn't have any pain at all.
Reply:You should expect some pain whenever you have a major surgery done (extractions included, you are removing part of your body), but some people don't experience any pain. Also upper teeth are usually easier to extract, so usually they have less pain than lower extractions. If you don't feel any pain, consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

Bone sticking out after tooth extraction and it was grinded down??

I had a tooth extraction done about 2 weeks ago and had a bone that was sticking out a few days after the exraction. It wasn't something the dentist can pull out since it was part of the jaw bone (i'm guessing) so instead he grinded down the bone and said the gum should grow over it over time.... is this normal?? and is it okay and safe for the dentist to do this?? response from a dentist would be nice

thank you

Bone sticking out after tooth extraction and it was grinded down??
DEAR SHAR4LIFE,

WHEN A TOOTH IS EXTRACTED THERE MAY BE EXPOSED BONE. IF THIS IS PART OF THE JAW, THERE MAY BE LOCAL SURGERY THAT CAN BE DONE TO REMOVE THE EXPOSED BONE AND PUT A STITCH OVER IT.

IS IT NORMAL?

NO, BUT DOES IT HAPPEN NOW AND THEN, RARELY

SINCE I DID NOT SEE THE DENTIST ACTUALLY DO THIS, I CANNOT COMMENT AS TO WHETHER IT WAS OKAY OR NOT.

WHEN TEETH ARE EXTRACTED ATRAUMATICALLY THIS NEVER HAPPENS.
Reply:I'm not a dentist. But I've been a dental assistant for 20 years. And yes bone spurs are very common. Some are small and work there way out. Some are big. And some are still attached to the jaw bone which might have been the case with you. Grinding down the bone is a routine procedure, trust me. If you gums heal over it you will be fine. If not than he may have to open up the area and file some more and put a couple of stitches in to make sure it heals properly.

Don't worry!
Reply:normal.. take your antibiotics!!!
Reply:It is normal that the dentist 'filled' down the bone. Your teeth are supported by bone, and the supporting bone can be sharp after an extraction. If it is too sharp the tissue will not heal correctly, and it would need to be addressed. Once it is addressed, and the bone is no longer 'pointy' then the tissue can properly heal. Your dentist has to do that in order for the wound to heal properly. It does sound odd, but I assure you it is normal.
Reply:yes, it will heal over. i had a small piece of bone sticking out the other day, but my dentist was able to pull it out. good luck to you.

I had a traumatic tooth extraction a week ago and its still really hurting.?

I had penicillin just before but the toothache didn't get better. The dentist wasn't sure which tooth it was so I got him to take out the one I thought it was. This took about an hour and the dentist said it was usually much easier. My root was bent and he had to ram an instrument right up my gum to break it away from the bone. I needed extra anasthetic because he was going so high. I have had loads of awful dental work in the past but this was by far the worst. After, I saw %26amp; felt something hard (and was in agony) and went to the emergency dentist who x-rayed it and saw a large piece of bone there. She said my symptoms were due to a very traumatic extraction. She gave me metrozinadole which should have cleared it up but it didn't. I have been taking loads of very strong pain meds (much more than I should) but I am still in agony. I wake up every night and can't sleep until I take more tablets.Should I be in so much pain?Would it be better if I had the bone removed? When will pain go?

I had a traumatic tooth extraction a week ago and its still really hurting.?
It could be a dry socket. They are very very painful
Reply:it could be a dry socket like person above says when a tooth is removed it leaves a clot but sometimes the clot disapears so it very sore had same problem last yr also bits of tooth will slowly move through gums and come out ,where you told to rinse with warm salty water to as its ment to help take some painkillers and hopefully it wont be to bad ,did u have a few days pain free then pain that could indicate a dry socket
Reply:I really feel for you-what a horrid experience-I had a molar out a month ago-it took 5 mins and my dentist was great-and I dread dental treatment.

If I was you-I would go and see a different dentist if you can-asap.

It will probably be fine-and just take more time to heal as it was such a long extraction-but a second proeffesional opinion would put your mind at rest.

Also-they can prescribe you safe effective painkillers.

Hope you feel much better soon.
Reply:I wouldn't go back to the first dentist but I would see a dentist because that doesn't sound right. Maybe you have an infection under the gum. Is there an emergency dental hospital you can go to or a dental school (practioners are very closely supervised by experts in the field). If not, I would ask friends or colleagues if they can recommend a good dentist. Don't suffer with the pain.
Reply:Omg, this sounds awful. First of all, although it's no help to be wise after the event, your dentist should not have carried out this sort of work without having given you an x-ray, so you may want to consider changing him/her in the future when you have got this sorted out.

I'm wondering if you have a dental hospital in your area you may be able to get a referral to?

Also, chewing a whole clove or two can help temporarily with the pain.

Best of luck to you anyway, sorry I can't be more helpful.

What happens if you mess with a tooth extraction site a week after the extraction?

I was brushing my teeth and it felt like I had some food in my extraction site. (this is not a wisdom tooth - I had those out a few years ago - it's the lower left molar in front of the wisdom tooh) Anyways I took a q-tip and wet it with warm water and was trying to remove whatever was there. I'm still not sure if it was food or not - because the blood clot is white. I did get something out and when I used the q-tip it seemed to me that the white stuff moved around - not alot but a little - the white filmy stuff is still there but my main concern is if I can dislodge the clot even though it's been 10 days?

What happens if you mess with a tooth extraction site a week after the extraction?
Call the oral surgeon's office and ask them what it could be.
Reply:you risk giving yourself a dry socket. A dry socket can be very painful. Do not mess with it.
Reply:if it hurts wen u touch it.like its sensitive, then have it checked up
Reply:i got food stuck in my extraction sites after having my 4 wisdoms out. didn't cause any problems. maybe if it really bothers you, ASK YOUR DENTIST IF a waterpik IS OK TO USE to get it out easily.
Reply:rinse your mouth out with salt water for bout a week then it should clear up if not consult your dentist or the clinic who done the extraction as i had the same done a few weeks ago , i would advise you to take ibrufen tablet for the pain
Reply:There should be no clot whatsoever after 10 days. If food gets lodged in the socket at this point, the very best thing to do is get it out, otherwise it will fester.
Reply:When it is done doing it's job, the clot will dettach. Rinse your mouth with salt water or peroxide three times a day to debride and soothe the area. One day, the clot will swish out during your rinses and it will be healed
Reply:Perhaps you should rinse and sort of slosh the water or salt-water around in your mouth. If you do loosen the clot, you might have a bit more risk of infection, but unless the site begins to bleed, alot, don't worry. If you do need to revisit the dentist/oral surgeon, mention this, but don't need an appointment made just because of it.
Reply:You can dislodge it by digging around with a q-tip....not a good idea. If you think you might have a bit of food in it, rinse your mouth with a bit of warm (not hot) salt water. If it does start to bleed a wet tea bag held on it for a bit will usually help. Some heal faster than others - if it is still an issue by Monday, call your dentist and tell then you are concerned about it and get it checked! You sure don't want an infection!
Reply:CALL YOUR DENTIST! It's probably nothing, but it is causing you concern..Call him. You'll get his answering service..and they will reach him or another dentist in his office that have them call you. Hate to bother him ?? That's his job....call him! ♥

How long after a tooth extraction can you begin using a straw?

I had a tooth extraction on Wednesday. Can I start drinking carbonated drinks and using a straw yet???

How long after a tooth extraction can you begin using a straw?
NO, this is a big NONO. My Dentist made sure that I knew this, said it might cause me to have a dry socket. that is when you lose the plug (mucus, blood clot) that is supposed to be over the opening where the tooth was. If this happens, you will have to go back at least three times a week to have the opening packed with gauze, until it heals up. Please be carefull.
Reply:The reason they say no straw is that you may accidentally pull your clot out and get a dry socket from the suction. Carbonated drinks should be okay by now, but I'd wait with the straw. A dry socket hurts!
Reply:The answer is 24 hours. During the first 24 hours you don't want to create any suction that will disturb the clotting process.

So if you had the extraction on Wednesday, you're good to go with a straw.

Good luck and have a beverage for me!!
Reply:Dr. Dave has given you the right answer. 24 hours is sufficient.
Reply:Not yet. Wait for at least 2 weeks.

How long should a blood clot last after tooth extraction?

Hi! I had a tooth extraction 8 days ago and now, my blood clot may be gone... I'm not sure because I can't see very well into the extraction site. I don't really feel pain or anything though.

I'm just wondering how long a blood clot generally needs to last after a tooth extraction. Any help would be really appreciated.

How long should a blood clot last after tooth extraction?
the blood clot is the foundation for healing. Healing involves formation of bone in the former site of the tooth. So there isn't an exact timeframe of how long a blood clot should stay in a post-operative extraction site.

I'm just wondering though...8 days and it's still open? Do you have any systemic issues? (bleeding disorders, hypertension, diabetes) I think you might want to consult with the dentist that extracted your tooth.
Reply:You may want to ask your doctor that question. The blood clot usually forms the next layer of skin. You may not feel pain now but have you had anything cold or hot to drink lately?
Reply:Ive never heard of that, Ive always heard blood clots are bad news, you don't want them, I would check with your dentist.

Has anyone ever taken halcion before a wisdom tooth extraction?

I am having one wisdom tooth pulled sometime in the next couple of weeks. It is an upper tooth. (I am 35 years old.)The tooth is not impacted. It is broken and has decay. I will be awake during the procedure, with just novocaine to numb the area. The oral surgeon and his assistant said I will not feel pain but I will feel up to about 20 pounds of pressure. This sounds extremely scary to me. Also, he gave me a prescription for Halcion, which he wants me to take before the extraction. I am also nervous about that, as I am very senstitive to medication, but he said all it will do is relax me and that it will also relax my jaw which will make it easier and faster for him to extract the tooth. I want it to be as easy and fast as possible so I am planning on taking the Halcion before my appointment. Has anyone had any experience? I am curious about reactions to Halcion and what to expect to feel when I take it, and about the pain/pressure I may feel, expecially if the tooth breaks.

Has anyone ever taken halcion before a wisdom tooth extraction?
I have not taken that, but I have had a tooth pulled...you will not feel pain, you will only feel pressure....try pushing your cheek where your gums are...thats the kind of pressure you feel. it does not HURT.

Now, I am pretty sure that med is like a Xanax, so you will be RELAXED, nothing more, nothing less.

I am the biggest chicken of all, so I was put to sleep for my wisdoms to come out, it was a piece of cake! But I did have a tooth pulled a few years back and was awake....don't worry he will have it out in like 3 minutes!

Good luck
Reply:Halcion is a benzodiazapine like valium and xanax and is used to treat anxiety. It's also pretty sedating. You'll be pretty out of it for the extraction. If you plan on taking it before leaving home, I would recommend getting someone to drive you to your appointment. You don't know how this medication will effect you and it's best just to be safe.

The novacaine will numb your mouth so you won't feel any pain from the tooth extraction. The halcion will leave you feeling tired, warm, fuzzy and worry free.

It really won't be all that bad. I had 4 wisdom teeth pulled all at once and 2 were impacted. Dental work is never fun, but yours sounds like it should be quick and easy.
Reply:I would forgo the Halcion, that's a sleeping pill - and not necessary (I'd ask for nitrous oxide if it's an option instead). The bothersome bit (to me) is always getting the Novacaine - but your tissues will be deadened to any pain.

Easiest time healing from Wisdom Tooth extraction?

Has anyone had a easy healing process from a wisdom tooth extraction? I had two wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and by the end of the night, I felt fine. Saturday, I was in a little pain, but not much. Today, I feel great. I heard so many horror stories, it scared the daylights out of me. Can anyone else relate to what I just went through? So far everyone that I spoke to, had a really hard time healing.

Easiest time healing from Wisdom Tooth extraction?
That sounds great! My only advice would be not to get really hot OR cold for a few days. I always heard that would make the gums set up 'dry socket'. Good luck.
Reply:omg! i remember when my friend had his taken out, his moouth was all puffed up, yeah it only gets better, try not to eat hard foods. so i got question. mine are starting to come in, but they are just below the skin of my gums. Whenever i take a big bite, or when i open my mouth to big it makes a clicking noise, did this happen to you?

back to your question, umm 4-7 days
Reply:I had a bad time with mine, but I had dry sockets.

My husband had his out and you would have never known it if he didn't tell you. He never complained once. I think he took tylenol one time after.
Reply:I'm a dentist.

I'd say that the majority of people who have their wisdom teeth out experience only mild discomfort, provided they are prescribed the appropriate pain medications. I extract bony-impacted wisdom teeth regularly, and it is very infrequent that I get patients coming back to my office complaining of intolerable pain.

You have to remember that people just love to exaggerate, especially when it comes to dental work. It makes their stories more interesting. The reality is that very few things that we do actually hurt, especially since we generously utilize anesthetics.
Reply:I had mine removed about 12 yrs ago, simple experience, no pain, no swelling or dry sockets. I didn't smoke, drink out of a straw, and I rinsed regularly with a water syringe. By the 2nd day I was enjoying a cheeseburger. (Guess I'm a quick healer) Just follow the post-operative instructions the Dr. gave you and you should be fine!
Reply:I was fine with it, couple days and I was up and about. My husband on the other hand, about a week later he was STILL moaning!(lol) What a puss. But..he's adorable....so..

It's a good thing I was the one having the babies ....

What should I expect with my upcoming wisdom tooth extraction?

I am scheduled to have my upper left wisdom tooth extracted next Monday. I am very nervous. It is not impacted, and I will be keeping my other 3 wisdom teeth. The one getting extracted has decay and is broken. I will be awake for the procedure. (I was given the option of IV sedation but the oral surgeon said he thinks all I need is oral sedation so he gave me a presciption for a sedative called Halcion that I am to take 1 hour before the extraction, and an antibiotic that I will be starting the day of the extraction.) The surgeon warned me that I may feel about 20 pounds of pressure while he is extracting the tooth, which sounds so frightening to me. He also warned me that the tooth will probably break as he pulls it. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect during %26amp; after the procedure, and if I should be worried about any side effects with Halcion. Also I have a very senstive gag reflex and am wondering if I should be worried about that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

What should I expect with my upcoming wisdom tooth extraction?
The medication he prescribed is to relax you. He will also be giving you shots of Novocaine to numb it. Yes it is alot of pressure but you will not feel it in the sense of hurting. You will just know he is moving it back and forth to get it out. Also some people have no problem getting wisdom teeth pulled. They come out as easy as the others. The only time there is a problem is if the roots are growing around other teeth roots. This does not sound like your case. If at any time the doctor thinks you can not handle it he will put you under. After the procedure the antibiotics are for possible infection. There may be some bruising but the pain is not that bad. Good luck and do not be afraid.
Reply:expect for a little pain, and you'll be eating soft foods for a while. try eating shakes, soft and cold, it will make you feel better. and if it hurts, just take ibproufen. it will help with the pain, and the swelling. if there is any.
Reply:my answer to you is this don't worry about the extraction if you need to get ti done then do it remember it's important to your health
Reply:I am 79 yrs old and just had a wisdom tooth pulled under a local shot no problem its sore now but minor pain
Reply:It's a common procedure, my friend just went through it. It won't be the most pleasant thing you've ever experienced but it probably won't be the worst either. Be strong and deal with it.. be thankful that in this day and age we have the best treatments, medicines and methods - you imagine what it would have been like having it done 200 years ago! Best of luck xx
Reply:well i got 3 of mine pulled and they gave me a valum to take an hour before hand and then gave me hydrocodones.... and just make sure that you dont eat before hand becuase you will get sick like i did......
Reply:You won't feel anything, the Novocaine will take care of that.

Be warned your mouth will be numb though! My girlfriend felt sorry for me when I had three wisdom teeth out, she bought me a beer, and I couldn't even feel that I was pouring Guinness down my chin!
Reply:i'd have opted for being put to sleep i had two wisdom teeth taken out. they hadn't even come through. they used a miniature jack (like a car jack) to dislocate my jaw then cut my gums open so they could get to the teeth. and i was then stitched up with dissolvable stitches. when i woke from the operation i looked like a chipmunk and had to drink dissolvable paracetamol through a straw, which is not nice even when drunk in one without a straw, i also had to eat sloppy food for 2 days due to not being able to open my mouth properly.
Reply:I was put to sleep and that was worse than the surgery itself because when I woke up, I vomited for like 8 hours. It was horrible. My sister my awake but numb and she was fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

The dentist I work for offers this to our patients if they want it. It is an anti-anxitey drug that will affect each person different. Many patients that come into our office usually do not even remember getting the procedure done. If you do take this drug be prepared to have someone drive you %26amp; pick you up. You will be very wobbly like if you have taken a few drinks. You will most likely sleep it off for the rest of the day. The usual prscription is to take 2 pills ( 0.25 mg) 1 hour prior to dental appt. And eat a nice large breakfast to keep you from vomiting since its a strong pill.
Reply:Can you just be put to sleep?? I would opt for that instead of being awake...I get mine out in 2 weeks (6 teeth!!) and I am getting knocked out! I would feel weird being awake and doped up.
Reply:If I were you I would ask to be put under. I just had 4 removed. It's a very unpleasant experience to be awake during a wisdom tooth extraction, even if you have a "relaxer." But if that's the only way, I would definitely take it. Trust the oral surgeon.
Reply:Your dentist is trained to know what drugs and when they can be used. He also studies the latest methods as required by the Dental Association and your state licensing body, just as physicians are required to do. Trust him.

Stop worrying. Relax. That is the best way to prepare for this.
Reply:I just had 10 teeth pulled Friday in preparation for full dentures. I was not put to sleep however they gave me a series of pills that morning that made me very drowsy. I was aware that something was being done but did not feel anything. I did have to have someone drive me home afterwards. I am the biggest chicken there is when it comes to going to the dentist and this was not as bad as I thought it would be. I go back in a month for the rest of them to be pulled and knowing that they are going to give me the meds I am ok with it. I really don't remember anything that happened.
