Taste After A Tooth Extraction?

Is it normal to get a taste in the mouth after a tooth extraction (non molar)?

It's only been 24 hours and I haven't used salt water yet (will do soon) and only brushed very lightly with water, so that could have something to do with it. It's just that I've got to go on a trip tomorrow and I am panicking about complications. Thanks.

you need to do the gargle with salt water thing...i had a tooth taken out and yes i had a odd taste for a bit but after awhile it went away just rinse with the salt water a lot...it will stop a lot of issues from happening, like if need be make up a little bottle of it so when you are out and about if you eat or drink something you can excuse yourself to a restroom and gargle...yes it seems gross but it will save you from possible infections or worse complications.
Reply:I have always noticed an odd taste.. almost like.. well, sort of rusty, for a few days after an extraction. It's normal. Resist the urge to mess with the extraction site with your tongue, and use EXTREME care if you brush around it. Most likely there is packing in there, and if you dislodge it, you can end up with a dry socket, which is a world of hurt all it's own.

The packing usually has some antiseptic in it, which can contribute to the odd taste, as well as your body's own healing process, generating white blood cells in the wound.

BTW: the packing is usually natural cellulose, which will eventually break down and be absorbed, so don't worry about it. Down the road you might find some small bone chips working their way out through the extraction site, but that usually takes a week or more to show up, and is completely normal.

Mostly.. leave it alone, and don't mess with it, especially if you are going on a trip.

Some slight pain is normal after an extraction, but it shouldn't be screaming agony.
