What is the time between tooth extraction and implant placement?

What is the proper procedure for Implants in terms of tooth extraction and implant placement? I have been told the tooth should be extracted and then wait several weeks to get the implant. I have also been told both can be done at the same time. What is the proper procedure?

Both are correct in different situations. If a tooth is infected and needs to be extracted, generally you wait 4 to 6 weeks for your body to completely heal the infection before you would put in an implant. If the tooth being remove is heavily damaged (or whatever), but has no infection in the bone, an implant can often be placed the same day. This will be dependent on the surgeon's experience. If he's had lots of failures with immediate placements, you'll be waiting. (and vice versa)
Reply:What I was told was the tooth can be pulled and the implant placed immediately, or the tooth can be pulled and after this has healed and the bone regrown, then the implant can be placed. However, I wasn't told the implant could be placed immediately by the dentist's office where the tooth was pulled (because his nephew, another dentist, got paid to pull the tooth) so I didn't get my implant immediately. Had I known that was possible I would have done it that way, just to cut down on the time without a tooth. I wonder, however, if this method means you have to have bone grafting done? I'm not sure - I didn't get into details that wouldn't pertain to me. BTW, mine was a front tooth so waiting was excruciating for me. I did have a flipper put in the day the tooth was pulled but for the rest of the time I had to wear it, it was uncomfortable and I wasn't able to eat anything that required me biting into it...
