Tooth Extraction?

I had a dentist appointment today to get a root canal done on my back lower moller last tooth in the back of my mouth besides my wisdom tooth which has since been extracted but when the Dentist went in and started his work he stopped midway and put a temporary filling on my whole tooth and I mean you can't even see my tooth thats how much he filled it but anyways he said my tooth was not salvagable and would need to be yanked. He is reffering me to a an oral surgeon because he says my jaw is strong and my tooth is attached really strong to it so he couldn't do it. What does an oral surgeon do that a regular dentist doesn't? Should I be concearned? He said after I get the tooth yanked to go back and we can talk about putting in a tooth but he said I didn't neccesarily need it because it is way back there and nobody could see it, is this true? How carefull do I need to be with this filling?

Tooth Extraction?
Well, I'm not very educated in this area but if you want my guess, I'd say it's going to probably be somewhat like the wisdom teeth extraction. Regular dentists only have one tool I believe and it's for snapping teeth out of the gum, but apparently your teeth are attached really strong and not to mention it's in the back. Molars are the deepest.

As for teeth replacement, it's going to be a fake tooth. You put it in to cover in a hole obviously but since it is back there, who's going to see it?
Reply:It's possible that he or she isn't comfortable doing those extractions. This doesn't mean the dentist is incompetent, but very intelligent because he or she is saying, "I'm not too comfortable doing this". It could also be that he can do it in say in 1 hour, but an oral surgeon might be able to do it in half that time and with less trauma. Your dentist is looking out for you and your well being.

As for replacing it, if it's the very last tooth in the back then you don't have to replace it b/c the only viable option are an implant, cantelever bridge, or unitlateral partial (I'm assuming you're only having trouble with just 1 tooth and all the other teeth are trouble free). Do you have a tooth opposing your tooth that needs to be extracted? If you do, then that tooth might drift down b/c there's nothing opposing it. If not, then that's good.

Hope things work well at the dentist.
Reply:He's doing you a favor. An oral surgeon extracts teeth all day long. We are faster and have all the right tools to do the job. We also have more training in this specific area. Don't be concerned. Unfortunately, we see this a lot. You have a few options (David) mentioned them. If it really bothers you, the best thing is an implant. Only you and your dentist can decide what's best for you. The temporary filling is a bit brittle, so do be careful until you get the tooth taken out.
Reply:If it is the very last tooth. You can get along fine with out it.
