Tooth extraction problems earlier today?

hey there, i went to the dentist this morning, had 2 fillings a went for a extraction , however, dentist was pulling tooth and its hurt like crazy so he stopped and refused to do anymore as there was a huge infection under the tooth preventing the anasectic working, i am now left with a very loose tooth that keeps bleeding on and off, is sore as u can imagine. i am taking painkillers and 400mg metronidazole 3 times a day and 500mg naproxen twice a day. how long will it take for these all to have effect and for my mouth to settle down, i have another appoiment next week to retry the extraction.

I am sorry you had such a traumatic experience.





However, your dentist was trying to help you and remove the source of your pain. He did his best to extract the tooth and wisely stopped as you were in pain. I think he had good intentions and really was trying to help you. Metronidazole is an excellent antibiotic for dental infections and ibuprofen/Naproxen will resolve the inflammation. The bleeding will stop very soon and you may view this as your body helping to "flush" the area, so only be concerned if there is profuse bleeding.





I recommend you consider using a mouthwash containing diluted hydrogen peroxide (available in correct solution over pharmacy counters) or a mouthwash containing chlorohexidene(again, available from pharmacy) twice a day. Keep the mouth wash in your mouth as long as possible, do not rinse the mouth wash out- just spit out and allow the remnants of the mouthwash to continue working around the tooth socket.





It is very important that you brush the area too to remove as much bacteria as possible and this should be carried out with a medium texture toothbrush or preferably with a round head electric toothbrush, prior to using the mouthwash.. Basically, you need to help the antibiotics kill the bacteria causing the infection.





keep the area clean, ensure you complete the course of antibiotics (don't drink alcohol-you'll be sick!) and take the anti inflammatories and you should fid a huge improvement in approx 36 hours.

Reply:Holy crap, I can't believe he didn't finish the extraction!! I'd find a new dentist! The painkillers should kick in fairly quickly. I hope you feel better soon.
Reply:It should take the antibiotic about 24 hours to kick in full strength and as the infection subsides so will the pain, if all goes well you should be in good shape for next week.

Reply:its usual for dentist to give a week of antibiotics for a week prior to tooth extraction.. Its happend to me a couple of times. Also if the tooth is now loose it might come out on its own. Keep taking pain killers and i would think next week it will be taken out without any problems.





Pain killers should kick in within a few hours.. antibiotics take at least 24/48 hours. good luck

Reply:Probably about 2 to 3 days. Try to avoid chewing near the painful area. I know it's a bummer, but it will come to an end
Reply:I am amazed that the dentist did not take an X-ray before the extraction and spot that abscess before he started yanking things out. That is the usual for exactly that reason.
Reply:I personally would call an oral surgeon. I had a dentist try to remove one of my wisdom teeth. Well, he pulled and pulled and pulled. He was literally in my lap! I made an appointment ASAP to see the oral surgeon. He grabbed the tooth with a pick like instrument and it was gone within seconds. AHHH, how much better I felt!

Your pain meds should have kicked in by now. My recommendation is to call an oral surgeon and get an emergency appointment for tomorrow. He or she will be able to gas you instead of using novocain. I think your dentist is being unresonable expecting you to walk around an entire week with a sore tooth. Good luck Hon!!!
Reply:Bless your heart. For now, all you can do is live with it and if it gets to be too much to handle, call the dentist and report what's going on and see if they can recommend something else. You might also ask them if you can rinse with listerine several times a day ~ that will help kill germs on the surface and keep some of the nasties out of your mouth.





My big question is why the dentist didn't see the infection before he/she started pulling (?) I'd be tempted to find another dentist. This can be very dangerous to your health if that infection gets in the blood stream.
Reply:You could find a dentist tat will knock you out, but the problem is with an infecton you need to have that healed up so it doesn't spread. May I suggest Colloidal Silver- It clerned up my abcessed tooth within days versus the antibiotics I couldn;t take. It has zero side effects, doesn't have a taste, doesn't interfere with other meds, safe to use even in your eyes and ears and everywhere, they use it in the hospitals in the burn wards by soaking the bandages in pure silver. I am so sorry you had to go thru with this. try to stay calm. Get the infection goen and get that tooth ouut even if they have to put you out to get it out. I would personally request that just incase. You don't want to go thru that pain again.
Reply:Well like you said, as a result of the infection you couldn't get numb. Once the antibiotics kick in you should be good in about 4 to 5 days, but it may take as long as 7 to 10 to get the entire infection cleared out. When you go back next week he should be able to take the tooth out with no problems. Take ALL your antibiotics.





Pain and swelling are usually worst on the third day and then start to get better after that. Cold compress off and on today and tomorrow.
