I got a wisdom tooth out 2 days ago, it was just with local freezing, nothing major. It didn't hurt that much the day I got it out. Yesterday, the day after the extraction, it hurt a bit on and off, in the morning and in the evening. Today it actually hurt more, the adjacent tooth throbbing like crazy.
Is this normal?

Reply:I got four wisdom teeth taken out at the same time. I was knock out for three days. I didn't feel any pain. I don't think that you should be feeling more pain as the days prolong. It should be healing and getting better. Go to the dentist and have him take a look at it again. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Reply:Depends if it is a surgical extraction or not. With a surgical extraction, the tooth or most of it is not exposed. With a regular extraction, the dentist would normally pull the gum away from the tooth and clamp onto it and pull, providing the root system was not a series of J's and hooks. Usually, pain will persist the following three days after an extraction of any kind. Expect to heal quickly. Also ask your dentist for a prescriptopn of Peridex.
Reply:Yep. Get a scrip for Vicodin. If they get stupid with you and deny this, make a pest of yourself and keep calling to let them know that the weak stuff they gave you doesn't work. Stick to your guns. Ever hear of Dr. Dean? He's the famous radio talk show doctor. When asked if he were stranded on a desert island and could have access to only one medication, he said "Vicodin". It has so many different uses besides pain, from cough control to 'regularity' if you eat something bad in a restraunt. So get your pain meds. You have a right to them.
Reply:I got 2 wisdom teeth out 2 days ago just with a local in the chair, and I have experienced similar pain to you. On the day they were extracted it was not really sore, then yesterday it felt more uncomfortable than painful, but today it is throbbing. My guess is that it is pretty typical, particularly given that we have the same sort of experiences.

Military healthcare question? Can my wife get a referal for Wisdom tooth extraction from the on base dentist.?
My wife is enrolled in tricare dental, but even with it the cost of wisdom tooth extraction will still probably be close to 800 dollars. I'm only an E-3 so 800 dollars is a huge chunk of my monthly pay. I got a referal from the on base dentist and it was paid for 100 percent. Will they allow spouses to get the same referals?

Let me start by saying unfortunately there is a slim chance you're wife will be able to have her tooth extracted on base, most base facilities only cover the active duty member.
Regarding the $800, that seems very high even if it needs to be cut out, has she been seen by an oral surgeon? I ask, because you didn't say in your information. If that was a direct quote, I would see someone else. If not, one will see her for a free evaluation with a referral from her dentist. They can also let her know what your portion would be, if I remember correctly it's less than 40%.
Most oral surgeons also have financing plans available if it's too expensive, but there is one other option like someone else mentioned. You can go to your branch’s relief society, they give money assistance for things like this. However, before you can be given the money they make you take a budget class, no matter what your rank is.
I had to have all four of mine removed (two cut out, which is more costly than pulling) before the military would allow me to come overseas with my husband and the total cost was over $1200 and we had to pay only $300. I avoided having them removed for years because I was afraid of the actual cost out of our pocket, but it ended up not being too terribly much in the scheme of things.
Good luck with this and just ignore the people who feel they need to be rude and negative!

you can go ahead and take the gauze out. the only time you need to put it in is if the empty space starts to bleed again. mashed potatoes with gravy, jello, pudding and some soft macaroni are great to eat. tomorrow be sure to start gargling with warm salt water to help the hole close up. do that 2-3 times a day.

When will I feel better after my wisdom tooth extraction?
I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth and it has been 2 days after surgery and my jaw is achy and stiff and I can't open my mouth far. When will it get better soon?
Also, I still have numbess on my chin because the roots hit my nerve. The surgeon said I will slowly get feeling back. Last night I noticed this intense iching on my chin..does this mean the nerve is healing?

Soreness is perfectly normal two days after an extraction, especially a surgical extraction. Stiffness of the jaw can also be expected from extraction of wisdom teeth.
Your chin is still numb due to injury of the inferior alveolar nerve, which runs inside your mandible and often near the roots of the mandibular third molars (wisdom teeth).
The surgeon does not know for sure that you will regain sensation, but he/she is able to make a good estimate based on the type of injury your nerve most likely suffered.
Nerve injuries come in three classifications (known as the Seddon classification): 1. Neuropraxia, 2. Axonotmesis, and 3. Neurotmesis.
Neuropraxia is most often a crush-type injury that does not result in any loss of continuity of the nerve sheath or the axons themselves. Thus, healing is more rapid and most often complete.
Axonotmesis results in loss of continuity of the axons, while the nerve sheath remains intact. A phenomenon known as Wallarian degeneration occurs, where the axon distant to the injury basically dies off. Stretch injuries commonly cause this. These injuries tend to heal with mild deficit long-term, because the tracts along which the axons traveled are still intact and thus axons can grow back to their proper positions more easily. Axonal growth occurs, if memory serves, about a millimeter a day. Obviously, severity and various other factors can affect the outcome.
Neurotmesis is a complete severing of the nerve. Wallerian degeneration occurs. Obviously, since both the axons and the sheath (epineurium, perineurium, endoneurium) are all broken, healing is much more difficult for the nerve. The sheath must heal AND the proximal ends of the axons must find the "tubes" through which to grow and thus, depending on various factors, healing is often slow and more often than not incomplete--even with surgical intervention to approximate the two ends of the nerve.
The fact that you feel an intching sensation on your chin bodes well for your chances of a full recovery. In all honesty, axonotmetic and neurotmetic injuries of the inferior alveolar nerve are very rare from third molar extractions.

I had posted an earlier question about numbness after wisdom tooth extraction. I forgot to add the most important detail. It has been 1 month since, and I still have numbness in my lower lip area. It appears I have some nerve damage. The questions are how long should I expect this feeling to last? and Should I contact another dentist or oral surgeon? Is this permanent?

Normally, the numbness should be gone by about 2 hours, that's why they give you very strong pain killers. I'm only 13 and I got mine done; well, my mom's a dentist and she did it for me so if something was wrong it was easy for me to talk to. You really urgently need to go see your dentist, and also maybe your doctor (if it is a bad nerve damage). Good Luck! xoxo
Reply:I would contact whoever did the extractions. In your lower jaw (mandible) there is a nerve that runs the length of your jaw and can sometimes be damaged during surgery causing temporary or permenent numbness.
Reply:In my case, it was more pain than I can ever imagine, as all 4 were removed at one sitting. I really don't remember any numbness after the pain decreased.
Best check with your dentist and/or the oral surgeon who did the operation.

Numbess should've disappeared as soon as the anesthesia wore off. If it's nerve damage, as sounds likely, it may never go away. But it's possible it's something they can fix by going back in (depends what happened).

or is just a Dentist (BDS) okay? I have learnt that an Oral Surgeon (OMFS) is more qualified and specilised in dealing with tooth extraction than a dentist (BDS).
Due to the potential complications like damage to nerve endings by a wisdom tooth extraction surgery, i would rather play the safe card.

Can i drink alchohol after a wisdom tooth extraction?
i had my top left wisdom tooth extracted on tuesday. and the dentist told me that it stopped bleeding roughly at his lunchtime, so when i left the practice i knew it hadnt stopped bleeding, safe to say my letter of complaint is in the post and i wont be goin back there!, so i went along to the emergency dentist where i had 3 stitches, wednesday it stopped bleeding, thursday, when i woke up i coughed and out came a blod clot from the extraction area, i have been spitting to see if its still bleeding. but i was told today to stop doing that! the swelling has gone down finally. i was just wondering if i can drink alcohol. not go mad just have a few beers or spirits, i have stopped smoking because i know that defo dont help.

Did the original dentist or emergency dentist give you an advice sheet with "dos and do nots" ?
I recommend you wait until another 48 hours and give your body a chance to clot the blood in the socket correctly.

I am avoiding mainstream pharmaceuticals (root word, 'Pharmacia' = Sorcery), which includes typical prescription antibiotics. Am looking for other natural/organic remedies to alleviate this ailment. Having had a really bad infection just like this. I suggest seeing your Doctor. I ended up with an abcess %26amp; lockjaw with painful spasms. In the hospital for 4 days...
I am not a big fan of medicine either but the infection can spread to your brain...

Anything taken to such extremes is ridiculous! Now--You had the tooth extracted and didn't rely on a Cobra from planet extractor to do the job did you? So be sane and get on the phone and ask your Oral Surgeon to prescribe pain medication and antibiotic to reduce swelling and pain as well. Unless you have a factory and access to all botany necessary to concoct needed antibiotics and pain relief give up this silliness! And the shower pik will harm the extraction cavity! You probably BLEW the blood clot to KINGDOM COME! And caused a dry socket! Now smarten up! Good luck.

If it doesn't get better in a few days, go see a doctor. They aren't ALL bad.

Does this sound like an exposed nerve after wisdom tooth extraction?

I had my botton right wisdom tooth removed well over a month ago now and for the first 2 weeks i had pain , earache , jawache , %26amp; it felt like my tooth was still there and throbbing , i think i may have had a mild dry socket but for the past 3 days whenever i eat or drink hot / cold food i get a wicked pain like a toothache same spot as before earache is horrible plus jawache , pain shooting up into my head causes me to have headaches often, i take pain killers for it as the pain goes away pretty much straight away when it has kicked in , when the tablets ware off i can be pain free for the rest of the day , i have noticed bending down causes the pain to come on and mainly with hot and cold too.
Does this sound like nerve damage from tooth extraction ?
also i have noticed the hole seems more open than it was last week strange to me.
i never eat sweets but the past few days i have been eating a couple a day , i wonder have i causes the hole to open up in anyway

It then needs to be packet with a medication to help the healing process. While its is healing the hole needs to then feel in and close after one month it is still healing. But the cold hot sensation your feeling can only be from a nerve in the tooth . The pain may be coming from the tooth next to it causing a referral pain. Go back to you Dr and see if the packing still needs to be done or if another tooth is causing the pain.

I've had 2 removed. About the only thing you really notice once the pain and oozing goes away, is, you tend to stick your tongue in the hole, alot.

After following advice I found online, I put a moist tea bag on wisdom tooth extraction site. One of the teabags ripped and now I have a piece of tea on the clot. will this be a problem? should I have my dentist remove it?

Nerve, ear and sinus cavity damage from attempted upper left wisdom tooth extraction?
I am 46 years old and two years ago I had a dentist attempt to pull my upper left wisdom tooth. After about three minutes of the dentist pulling and twisting on the tooth I had to stop him because the tooth was not moving and he was twisting my jaw so much that I told him I thought he was going to fracture my jaw. After a few months I began to notice physical problems that I link to this attempted extraction. Nerve twitching and mild pain in my upper left temple area, full blown sinusitis and a "fluttering" irritation/sensation in my left ear drum triggered by certain sounds. I had the wisdom tooth extracted by an oral surgeon 18 months ago, but these problems have not resolved/healed themselves. Can anyone confirm that these problems can be caused by such an attempted extraction? Can bone damage between the ear and sinus cavity be repaired? Have drugs like Neurontin and Lyrica been effective in treating such nerve damage? Any input on this is much appreciated. Thanks!

what you are experiencing is sometimes refered to as (oral facial tmj) temporomandibular joint pain. if you have experienced pain in the ear, neck jaw. or migraines, or headaches period. dizziness,etc; please contact your family physician asap in reference to these symptoms. and a medical lawyer, what was done to you is also being done to other's. as an intelligent individual, you must put a stop to it before someone is seriously injured. do your research and get your facts straight b-4 you decide to present them to your doctor. I want you to educate yourself on what has been done to you so that when you approach another health practioner,you will be forarmed and forwarned. and unable to be lead like a lamb to the slaughter about what is being done to your person. the balls in your court.

Has anyone had this happen with their tooth extraction?
This is the third day since I had my upper left molar extracted. I havent had any pain since I left the dentists office.Ive taken my pain medication and penicillin as I was advised to. Today when I look at the space where my tooth was I see a hole (which is logical) which had nothing in it but it is white around it a little bit. Does anyone know if this is normal?I dont have any pain I just wanted to know if this is normal.

This is why it is important to do warm salt water rinses a few times a day after extractions to keep the area clean. I do remember my gums being a bit white when they were healing from the extractions(I had all 4 wisdom teeth pulled in 1 day) when I brushed my gums %26amp; peroxided %26amp; salt watered my mouth it felt so much better because I was in some serious pain. If you are really worried just go back to your dentist %26amp; have him check you out.

You'll be fine. Though calling your dentist was a good idea. They're there to help, after all. If it continues to hurt for a long time, or increases in pain dramatically, or looks radically different suddenly, you could always go in and have them peek in your mouth to check. It shouldn't take too long and heck, they probably won't charge you just to peek.

What is the recovery time for a difficult wisdom tooth extraction?
I had a very difficult extraction of my lower wisdom tooth by an oral surgeon. The procedure lasted over an hour and consisted of the dentist drilling little pieces of my tooth off to get it out. (the tooth was in down under the skin sideways near my jaw)
My jaw is also so achy and I am still on soft foods (I can't even eat noodles!). I tried but today I am paying for it. I had the tooth out on Friday and I didn't go to work today. How long will I be out for? I am 28yrs old..not a teen

Reply:I had the exact same thing, they actually had to break the tooth in three places and then pull the pieces out because it had hooked through my jaw. You'll probably be tender for the rest of the week, but I was back to work in a few days. Just pack soup and jello. Sorry man, that sucks.
Reply:It took me about 2 days and that's mostly because of bleeding that occured, which isn't anything more than annoying. I didn't need the pain medication they gave me so I wouldn't expect a long recovery time.

Also before I chewed on pineapple core to reduce the swelling incurred from the surgery. Even after I put pineapple core next to the gums. It made me feel better. It took about 10 days for me to recover. Good luck and hope you feel better!

Reply:Everyone has different reaction to pain, and every extraction is different. It took me two days but my teeth weren't very impacted and I have a high tolerence for pain. Most people I know (myself included) have had their wisdom teeth out on Friday so they can be at work on Monday so two days is pretty much the norm, but the procedure you described sounds pretty extreme so it may be longer.
Have you reported that your are still experiencing numbness to your dentist? I'm sure he'd tell you to avoid chewing anything to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or lip. Three days seems like a long time to not get the feeling back.

Hole remains in gum nearly 1 year after wisdom tooth extraction.?
I had two of my wisdom teeth extracted nearly a year ago. One was poking out and was a breeze compared to the other which was hidden deep. The hidden one obviously hurt much more than the other during recovery but all went well, so I was told. A week or so after the extraction I had my stiches taken out...I felt that it might have been too soon for them to be taken out, at least on the side of the hidden tooth...but couldn't stand the feeling of them anymore so just went ahead without saying anything. Time passed and the one tooth (the easy one) healed over and all is well, but the hidden one never quite healed over. Months passed, and now nearly a year, and there is still a hole from where the tooth was removed. No pain at all, just a hole that collects food and who knows what. I called the surgeon's office once and they said it takes time, but how long? I would like to go back to their office and make them look, but can't as I live in FL now, far from VT. What do I do?

Leaving sutures in place for more than a week can actually worsen a problem because they are no longer needed to hold the healing tissue together and act as a foreign body. I always remove sutures (in the mouth) after 5 days. So you weren't wrong to get them out.
This hole is, I'm sorry to say, normal anatomy if the tooth you had removed was deeply buried. After a year it is unlikely that you will get much more bone remodelling and you will either have to live with it or have a surgeon remodel the bone (which is not difficult, incidentally). In any event it is important that you use a single-tufted toothbrush every day to clean the hole out.
I know this is an annoying problem, but will not cause any long-term harm.

Reply:Go to the dentist, then go to a doctor for a diabetes check. I had one pulled and it did the same thing then I went into diabetic coma due to high blood sugar....Diabetes causes slow or no healing...Be checked

Reply:I reckon the first answer is right you know, they may well have failed to suture the hole properly. Go to a GP for a health and diabetes check as the second answer says, it won't do any harm! But if there is no infection or problem I reckon it might be that its healed like that

you probably lost some bone when the tooth was extracted,maybe it was a traumatic extraction,i suspect it will heal on its own.if not you could visit an oral surgeon who will x ray and check it.he may advise to make some bone augmentation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for self extraction of a chipped tooth?
I have to pull this tooth it hurts more and more and I think it might get infected. I have no money or insurance so I don't know what else to do. I tried to use plyers but its in there so tight. Should I cut through the gum and what can I use to prevent infection besides peroxide. And is there anything that could tenderize the gums so it might loosen up. It feels like I could crush it with the plyers and that would bad. Is there anyone out there that is not quite a dentist and needs some one to practice on? It hurts so bad I am thinking of getting myself convicted cause I think they might do it Im not sure. Its hard to concentrate and think logically right now but I am going crazy and I need to do something. What did people do before dentistry? Please punch me in the face lower left side knock my tooth out. Mental Dental caveman tooth extraction. I'll borrow money from the mob. What should I do cut the gum should I get drunk first then I will slip and cut my whole mouth open.

go to a dentist. Many will allow you to pay a few dollars a week. If you are near a dental school, you might get it done for free. If you live in a large city, there are dental clinics that will charge based on income. DO NOT DO THIS YOURSELF

If you wait, and the tooth is infected, it can travel further into your body, making matters even worse..

Extraction of a tooth a home almost always leads to infection which can is not only excruciating pain but can also prove to be fatal if left untreated. Do yourself a HUGE favor and have this tooth pulled by a dentist, he/she will numb your gums with a Lidocaine injection and will pull the tooth correctly.

How long should I have pain after tooth extraction/ bone graft?
I had a tooth extraction and bone graft done on the top back molar (next to where my wisdom teeth would be) about 48 hours ago. I am in excruciating pain and nothing is working. I have been given vicodin es and motrin 800. I have been icing it and everything else they told me to do. Is there anything else i can do to releive it?

Question about eating after a tooth extraction?
I developed an infection in a wisdom tooth 2 days ago, and this afternoon I had an emergency extraction. I am in so much pain, but I AM STARVING! I have not eaten since the pain began! I know they say not to eat for a certain period of time, and then when you do, only soft foods. It's only been 2 hours since the bastard was yanked out, is there anything at all I could safely eat this soon? Anything besides broth? *ack*
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Eat anything you want just make sure that you cut it in tiny bits and then smush it up into a ball that you can nibble at with the good side!
I know you're really hungry, but NIBBLING will allow you to eat anything you want buddy...just nibble really slow...I got away with eating a hamburger a few hours after my surgery, I just had to nibble it and it took me about 30 minutes to eat it, but trust me, it works....
But, If you are really really hurting badly and the pain killers aren't kicking in yet because it may take a few hours for them to kick in full force, then just maybe try for now:
yogurt
applesauce
pudding
mashed potatoes
fruit smoothie
cooked noodles
scrambled eggs
But, for about 2 days eat kind of gently and slowly so you don't pull the clot out of the gum area.

Don't forget to ice it! An ice pack on your cheek will reduce swelling and pain and make it heal much faster.

You should eat only soft things because you don't want to remove the blood that has clotted in the extraction site because then you will get a dry socket and that will hurt really bad and it will take longer for the gums to heal. If you're under 30, get it done now. I'm 41 and only just had mine removed in Germany. Dentist here told me that they should have been extracted when I was in my twenties when the teeth and surrounding bone are much softer and easier to remove. But thanks to our British government at that time trying to save money, they told dentists not to take wisdom teeth out! Result.... the most painful experience I've ever had! Seems your really too old at 40+ for this, very risky ( one reason why they wont use a general anaesthetic) and the teeth have become very hard, which makes them brittle and they break into pieces when they try to pull them so lots of drilling into your jaw etc. Took about an hour a tooth! But, after effects not too bad, you look like a hamster for up to a week but the swelling goes down quite quickly ( use plenty of ice packs) As someone else pointed out, it's being left with the holes in your face that make it difficult to eat without getting stuff in them. So, get it done, sooner rather than later, it's much better than the constant aching in your jaw and skull and facing something like medieval torture a few years down the line. Best of luck!

Pieces of bone coming up 6 months after wisdom tooth extraction?
I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth extracted back in April. The holes have been healing nicely so far. I noticed last week that I have what seems like a sliver of bone or tooth that has come up thru one of the extraction sites. It doesn't hurt at all but it is hard to leave it alone! Is this something that normally happens after a wisdom tooth extraction? I called the oral surgeon and he didn't seem concerned. He said I could let it work itself out on it's own or I could try and pull it out myself. I'm scared to pull it out for fear that I'll do something to hurt myself. Anyone ever have these? Did you pull them out yourself or go back to the oral surgeon?

They are only root fragments that got missed in the blood and tissue. They should work out on their own. If you try to pull them and they hurt, stop. If they are not gone in another few weeks see your regular dentist.
Reply:Don't fiddle with it with your fingers. It might infect the site. Your gums will push it up on their own, and brushing/flossing will help work it out. Besides, your Curious Tongue will fiddle with it all day.
Reply:This can happen if all the pieces of your teeth were not completely removed when they were extracted. It is normal, it's something the body does to expell foreign matter. It happened when my arm went through a glass window. The doctor tried to take as much of the glass out as possible, but he told me there still might be some left cuz glass is hard to see. A little while (1 to 2 months) after that, I noticed there were pieces of glass coming out of my skin. You will not hurt yourself by pulling the pieces out, although it might be painful. There will be healed skin underneath it. If it is painful, just leave it alone. It will come out on its own eventually!!
Reply:I had the same problem. I had oral surgery last week and had the bone removed. The surgery only took about 10 mins. I did get stitches so I couldn't eat anything solid for a couple of days. I was home from work for 2 days. I tried to let them work there way out but they got bigger and more soreness started. Good Luck

Tooth extraction is very common and complications are very rare. You need not be that anxious although tomorrow will not be the best day of your week.
Reply:You have to suck it up and remain positive. I know it's a bit scarey, but it's usually not as bad as we build it up to be. Tell your dentist your phobia, and let him/her decide which is the best agent to use for numbing, sleep, etc.
Those of us like you and me, fret and freak and get ourselves all worked up, and when the procedure is over we realize it wasn't all that bad,,, the hardest part is the stuff we put ourselves through worrying about it.

I removed two of my older daughter's wisdom teeth at 2:00 in the afternoon and told her to go home and lie down until dinner time. Before I got home, she had already left for the mall! I was rather angry, because I figured that she'd be moaning all night long and asking me what to do for the pain. Much to my happy surprise, she seemed just fine. She said that she waited until the numbness started to go away and she felt pretty good, so she decided to get up and go.
Same thing with my son. We were actually headed home from a drum lesson and he asked if we could stop in the office to check out the sore place in his mouth. It turned out to be an erupting wisdom tooth. He asked if I felt like taking it out right then, so I did. (I was afraid he might change his mind if he thought about it overnight.) His mom didn't even know he had a wisdom tooth taken out until he had to take the gauze out of his mouth to eat dinner. His uppers were both kind of difficult and he had trouble healing with one of them (sinus involvement), but that didn't last for more than 3 or 4 days.
With my third child, I took her to the oral surgeon, because the roots were sort of close to the nerve and _I_ didn't want to be the one to cause her any trouble if things got difficult. She had nitrous oxide and little bit of iv sedation and had all four removed at once. I wanted to get her right home, but she asked me to stop off at the mall before we went home. She insisted that she was okay. Instead of going home and lying down, she walked through the mall. Yes, she was biting on her gauze packs (in the mall!), but still she was a lot more active than I would recommend. She had no trouble at all healing. I think she went out that night, too. (It was 1999, so I don't remember the details.)
I'm not saying that they are ALL like this, but there are wisdom teeth and then there are w*!`S^D@m TEETH!!! I always say that wisdom teeth (and root canals, by the way) are like teenagers. At least 90% are no trouble at all, but everybody talks about the bad ones.

Bone sticking out after tooth extraction and it was grinded down??
I had a tooth extraction done about 2 weeks ago and had a bone that was sticking out a few days after the exraction. It wasn't something the dentist can pull out since it was part of the jaw bone (i'm guessing) so instead he grinded down the bone and said the gum should grow over it over time.... is this normal?? and is it okay and safe for the dentist to do this?? response from a dentist would be nice

Reply:I'm not a dentist. But I've been a dental assistant for 20 years. And yes bone spurs are very common. Some are small and work there way out. Some are big. And some are still attached to the jaw bone which might have been the case with you. Grinding down the bone is a routine procedure, trust me. If you gums heal over it you will be fine. If not than he may have to open up the area and file some more and put a couple of stitches in to make sure it heals properly.

If it is too sharp the tissue will not heal correctly, and it would need to be addressed. Once it is addressed, and the bone is no longer 'pointy' then the tissue can properly heal. Your dentist has to do that in order for the wound to heal properly. It does sound odd, but I assure you it is normal.

I had a traumatic tooth extraction a week ago and its still really hurting.?
I had penicillin just before but the toothache didn't get better. The dentist wasn't sure which tooth it was so I got him to take out the one I thought it was. This took about an hour and the dentist said it was usually much easier. My root was bent and he had to ram an instrument right up my gum to break it away from the bone. I needed extra anasthetic because he was going so high. I have had loads of awful dental work in the past but this was by far the worst. After, I saw %26amp; felt something hard (and was in agony) and went to the emergency dentist who x-rayed it and saw a large piece of bone there. She said my symptoms were due to a very traumatic extraction. She gave me metrozinadole which should have cleared it up but it didn't. I have been taking loads of very strong pain meds (much more than I should) but I am still in agony. I wake up every night and can't sleep until I take more tablets.Should I be in so much pain?Would it be better if I had the bone removed? When will pain go?

Reply:I really feel for you-what a horrid experience-I had a molar out a month ago-it took 5 mins and my dentist was great-and I dread dental treatment.
If I was you-I would go and see a different dentist if you can-asap.
It will probably be fine-and just take more time to heal as it was such a long extraction-but a second proeffesional opinion would put your mind at rest.
Also-they can prescribe you safe effective painkillers.

Reply:Omg, this sounds awful. First of all, although it's no help to be wise after the event, your dentist should not have carried out this sort of work without having given you an x-ray, so you may want to consider changing him/her in the future when you have got this sorted out.

Reply:I really feel for you-what a horrid experience-I had a molar out a month ago-it took 5 mins and my dentist was great-and I dread dental treatment.
If I was you-I would go and see a different dentist if you can-asap.
It will probably be fine-and just take more time to heal as it was such a long extraction-but a second proeffesional opinion would put your mind at rest.
Also-they can prescribe you safe effective painkillers.

I was brushing my teeth and it felt like I had some food in my extraction site. (this is not a wisdom tooth - I had those out a few years ago - it's the lower left molar in front of the wisdom tooh) Anyways I took a q-tip and wet it with warm water and was trying to remove whatever was there. I'm still not sure if it was food or not - because the blood clot is white. I did get something out and when I used the q-tip it seemed to me that the white stuff moved around - not alot but a little - the white filmy stuff is still there but my main concern is if I can dislodge the clot even though it's been 10 days?

My Dentist made sure that I knew this, said it might cause me to have a dry socket. that is when you lose the plug (mucus, blood clot) that is supposed to be over the opening where the tooth was. If this happens, you will have to go back at least three times a week to have the opening packed with gauze, until it heals up. Please be carefull.

Has anyone ever taken halcion before a wisdom tooth extraction?
I am having one wisdom tooth pulled sometime in the next couple of weeks. It is an upper tooth. (I am 35 years old.)The tooth is not impacted. It is broken and has decay. I will be awake during the procedure, with just novocaine to numb the area. The oral surgeon and his assistant said I will not feel pain but I will feel up to about 20 pounds of pressure. This sounds extremely scary to me. Also, he gave me a prescription for Halcion, which he wants me to take before the extraction. I am also nervous about that, as I am very senstitive to medication, but he said all it will do is relax me and that it will also relax my jaw which will make it easier and faster for him to extract the tooth. I want it to be as easy and fast as possible so I am planning on taking the Halcion before my appointment. Has anyone had any experience? I am curious about reactions to Halcion and what to expect to feel when I take it, and about the pain/pressure I may feel, expecially if the tooth breaks.

I am the biggest chicken of all, so I was put to sleep for my wisdoms to come out, it was a piece of cake! But I did have a tooth pulled a few years back and was awake....don't worry he will have it out in like 3 minutes!

If you plan on taking it before leaving home, I would recommend getting someone to drive you to your appointment. You don't know how this medication will effect you and it's best just to be safe.

Easiest time healing from Wisdom Tooth extraction?
Has anyone had a easy healing process from a wisdom tooth extraction? I had two wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and by the end of the night, I felt fine. Saturday, I was in a little pain, but not much. Today, I feel great. I heard so many horror stories, it scared the daylights out of me. Can anyone else relate to what I just went through? So far everyone that I spoke to, had a really hard time healing.

Whenever i take a big bite, or when i open my mouth to big it makes a clicking noise, did this happen to you?

I extract bony-impacted wisdom teeth regularly, and it is very infrequent that I get patients coming back to my office complaining of intolerable pain.
You have to remember that people just love to exaggerate, especially when it comes to dental work. It makes their stories more interesting. The reality is that very few things that we do actually hurt, especially since we generously utilize anesthetics.

By the 2nd day I was enjoying a cheeseburger. (Guess I'm a quick healer) Just follow the post-operative instructions the Dr. gave you and you should be fine!

What should I expect with my upcoming wisdom tooth extraction?
I am scheduled to have my upper left wisdom tooth extracted next Monday. I am very nervous. It is not impacted, and I will be keeping my other 3 wisdom teeth. The one getting extracted has decay and is broken. I will be awake for the procedure. (I was given the option of IV sedation but the oral surgeon said he thinks all I need is oral sedation so he gave me a presciption for a sedative called Halcion that I am to take 1 hour before the extraction, and an antibiotic that I will be starting the day of the extraction.) The surgeon warned me that I may feel about 20 pounds of pressure while he is extracting the tooth, which sounds so frightening to me. He also warned me that the tooth will probably break as he pulls it. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect during %26amp; after the procedure, and if I should be worried about any side effects with Halcion. Also I have a very senstive gag reflex and am wondering if I should be worried about that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

The medication he prescribed is to relax you. He will also be giving you shots of Novocaine to numb it. Yes it is alot of pressure but you will not feel it in the sense of hurting. You will just know he is moving it back and forth to get it out. Also some people have no problem getting wisdom teeth pulled. They come out as easy as the others. The only time there is a problem is if the roots are growing around other teeth roots. This does not sound like your case. If at any time the doctor thinks you can not handle it he will put you under. After the procedure the antibiotics are for possible infection. There may be some bruising but the pain is not that bad. Good luck and do not be afraid.
Reply:expect for a little pain, and you'll be eating soft foods for a while. try eating shakes, soft and cold, it will make you feel better. and if it hurts, just take ibproufen. it will help with the pain, and the swelling. if there is any.

Reply:i'd have opted for being put to sleep i had two wisdom teeth taken out. they hadn't even come through. they used a miniature jack (like a car jack) to dislocate my jaw then cut my gums open so they could get to the teeth. and i was then stitched up with dissolvable stitches. when i woke from the operation i looked like a chipmunk and had to drink dissolvable paracetamol through a straw, which is not nice even when drunk in one without a straw, i also had to eat sloppy food for 2 days due to not being able to open my mouth properly.

You will just know he is moving it back and forth to get it out. Also some people have no problem getting wisdom teeth pulled. They come out as easy as the others. The only time there is a problem is if the roots are growing around other teeth roots. This does not sound like your case. If at any time the doctor thinks you can not handle it he will put you under. After the procedure the antibiotics are for possible infection. There may be some bruising but the pain is not that bad. Good luck and do not be afraid.
Reply:expect for a little pain, and you'll be eating soft foods for a while. try eating shakes, soft and cold, it will make you feel better. and if it hurts, just take ibproufen. it will help with the pain, and the swelling. if there is any.

Reply:It's a common procedure, my friend just went through it. It won't be the most pleasant thing you've ever experienced but it probably won't be the worst either. Be strong and deal with it.. be thankful that in this day and age we have the best treatments, medicines and methods - you imagine what it would have been like having it done 200 years ago! Reply:well i got 3 of mine pulled and they gave me a valum to take an hour before hand and then gave me hydrocodones.... and just make sure that you dont eat before hand becuase you will get sick like i did......

Be warned your mouth will be numb though! My girlfriend felt sorry for me when I had three wisdom teeth out, she bought me a beer, and I couldn't even feel that I was pouring Guinness down my chin!
Reply:i'd have opted for being put to sleep i had two wisdom teeth taken out. they hadn't even come through. they used a miniature jack (like a car jack) to dislocate my jaw then cut my gums open so they could get to the teeth. and i was then stitched up with dissolvable stitches. when i woke from the operation i looked like a chipmunk and had to drink dissolvable paracetamol through a straw, which is not nice even when drunk in one without a straw, i also had to eat sloppy food for 2 days due to not being able to open my mouth properly.
Reply:I was put to sleep and that was worse than the surgery itself because when I woke up, I vomited for like 8 hours. It was horrible. My sister my awake but numb and she was fine. I wouldn't worry about it.
Has anyone ever taken halcion before a wisdom tooth extraction?
I am having one wisdom tooth pulled sometime in the next couple of weeks. It is an upper tooth. (I am 35 years old.)The tooth is not impacted. It is broken and has decay. I will be awake during the procedure, with just novocaine to numb the area. The oral surgeon and his assistant said I will not feel pain but I will feel up to about 20 pounds of pressure. This sounds extremely scary to me. Also, he gave me a prescription for Halcion, which he wants me to take before the extraction. I am also nervous about that, as I am very senstitive to medication, but he said all it will do is relax me and that it will also relax my jaw which will make it easier and faster for him to extract the tooth. I want it to be as easy and fast as possible so I am planning on taking the Halcion before my appointment. Has anyone had any experience? I am curious about reactions to Halcion and what to expect to feel when I take it, and about the pain and/or pressure I may feel during the extraction. Thanks!

The dentist I work for offers this to our patients if they want it. It is an anti-anxitey drug that will affect each person different. Many patients that come into our office usually do not even remember getting the procedure done. If you do take this drug be prepared to have someone drive you %26amp; pick you up. You will be very wobbly like if you have taken a few drinks. You will most likely sleep it off for the rest of the day. The usual prscription is to take 2 pills ( 0.25 mg) 1 hour prior to dental appt. And eat a nice large breakfast to keep you from vomiting since its a strong pill.
Reply:Can you just be put to sleep?? I would opt for that instead of being awake...I get mine out in 2 weeks (6 teeth!!) and I am getting knocked out! I would feel weird being awake and doped up.
Reply:If I were you I would ask to be put under. I just had 4 removed. It's a very unpleasant experience to be awake during a wisdom tooth extraction, even if you have a "relaxer." But if that's the only way, I would definitely take it. Trust the oral surgeon.
Reply:Your dentist is trained to know what drugs and when they can be used. He also studies the latest methods as required by the Dental Association and your state licensing body, just as physicians are required to do. Trust him.
Stop worrying. Relax. That is the best way to prepare for this.
Reply:I just had 10 teeth pulled Friday in preparation for full dentures. I was not put to sleep however they gave me a series of pills that morning that made me very drowsy. I was aware that something was being done but did not feel anything. I did have to have someone drive me home afterwards. I am the biggest chicken there is when it comes to going to the dentist and this was not as bad as I thought it would be. I go back in a month for the rest of them to be pulled and knowing that they are going to give me the meds I am ok with it. I really don't remember anything that happened.
